Signed in Japanese script in Indian ink lower right. Koyo Okada's passionate and persistent preoccupation with Mount Fuji began as early as 1916. Mount Fuji by Koyo Okada. Very large 1950's.

          Est: $3,500 - $5,000

Very large 22" x 17 7/8" gelatin silver print, vintage 1950's. Okada (1895 - 1972) devoted most of his professional life to photographing Mount Fuji. In 1940 he established the Mt. Fuji Photo Association. His negatives and equipment were destroyed during WWII, but afterwards he pursued his photography of the mountain with greater determination. His photographs are used on postage stamps and currency, and there is a museum dedicated to him near Mt. Fuji. The print is rich, though there is some discoloring at the sides of the print, especially at the left. Okada's signature in gold is on the lower right.
