    Yoichi Ohira (1946 - 2022) Bottiglia

    Est: -

Artist/Designer; Manufacturer: Yoichi Ohira (Japanese, b. 1946) Marking(s); notes: signed, 1/1 unico, marking(s); 2001 Materials: glass Dimensions (H, W, D): 9"h, 5.5"dia Additional Information: The vessel was produced with Maestro Livio Serena and Maestro Giacomo Barbini. The lot is accompanied by a copy of the original purchase receipt from Barry Friedman Ltd., dated 3.13.2002. Detail photos include two group shots depicting eight vessels, all of the same provenance, offered individually as consecutive lots in this auction. Reference: Yochi Ohira: A Phenomenon in Glass exhibition catalog, Barry Freidman Ltd., pg. 246. Provenance: Barry Friedman Ltd., New York, New York | Private Collection, Ithaca, New York. About the collection: The eight Yoichi Ohira vases offered in this auction were part of an extensive collection of art glass located in Ithaca, New York. The late collector's wife recalls their first glass purchase in a London antique shop circa 1985, which ignited a 30+ year passion for the genre. The couple and their daughter acquired pieces individually during their travels around Western Europe, Toronto, and New York, and ultimately amassed around 300 vessels and sculptures by artists including Fulvio Bianconi, Toots Zynsky, Carlo Scarpa, Ercole Barovier, Paolo Venini, Vittorio Ferro and others. "My husband became a student of the art he collected," recalls Mrs. N. and their daughter. "With each new artist he admired, he would buy books about them, and the biographies and catalogs became catalysts for acquiring more pieces. He was always looking for variety, and he would seek out individual pieces to round out a segment of the collection. When something caught his eye, he pounced on it, and if he couldn't have that particular piece, he'd search for one like it." ------------------------- "After working as a corporate designer, Ohira became independent and established his own style, with designs skillfully combining transparent and opaque glass. Ohira acquired ideas from Roman-period mosaic glass while also incorporating the forms of ceramics and lacquerware seen in the East Asian region. He skillfully harmonized the parameters of classic Western art with craft elements from the East. Having absorbed every aspect of the history of Venetian glass, Ohira sought to integrate Japanese and Venetian cultures and aesthetics. He ultimately transcended those vast traditions to achieve his own distinct style, creating glass whose beauty is universal." - source: toyama-glass-art-museum.jp

YOICHI OHIRA (Japan, 1946) for De Majo. Murano glass vase/bottle in red, green and yellow colors, 1989. Made up of two pieces (the upper part is a plug). Signed, dated and located. Published in "Murano. Colour, light, fire", p. 86. Measurements: 38 x 14 x 12 cm. In this series Ohira pays tribute to the delicacy and fineness of the famous Murano glass. The elegant simplicity of the overlapping shapes and the subtle color combinations used make this vase/bottle fit in with the classic creations made in the 80s. Yoichi Ohira's language is inspired by Asian craftsmanship and traditional Italian glass techniques reinterpreted with innovative taste. With his pieces he reflected different concepts and materials, such as the water of the Venice canals, as well as marble and stone, even eggshell and lacquer. Familiar with glass since 1969 when he worked in Japan as a glassblower, it was in 1973 when he moved to Venice enthralled by the book “Murano” that fortuitously fell into his hands. Excited and amazed by the fine glass he found in that publication, he moved to the city of canals and completed a bachelor's degree in sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts. He began working with Murano glass at the Centro Studio Pittori nell'Arte del Vetro di Murano (commonly known as Fucina degli Angeli) in 1973. In 1987, he was offered the position of artistic director at the De Majo glassworks in Murano, where he worked until 1992 with some of the most talented and accomplished glass masters on the island. From that moment on he made the important glass pieces today celebrated as masterpieces.
