Provenance: Vangard Gallery, Cork where purchased by the present owner A highly regarded landscape painter, Gwen O'Dowd's work has from the beginning focused on the sea and especially on the meeting of water and shoreline. There's more than an echo of the sublime in her majestic vision of nature as the domain of vast, elemental forces. She invariably works in series, and each series is usually linked to a particular motif or feature. She made her Cladach series from 2004 to 2006. Often her titles are in Irish, as here, with Cladach translating as shore, captured as a wave bursts explosively against the land. Aidan Dunne, March 2020

Provenance: Hillsboro Fine Art, Dublin (label verso); Private Collection Gwen O'Dowd's textural, architectonic compositions usually hinge on the interaction of sea and land or, to be more specific, tide and rock. The relentless energy of the tides wears down the shore, finds and infiltrates faults and fissures, carves out hollows and channels. The energies involved can be explosive, as in several images in her Cladach (Seashore) series, as waves erupt through openings in hidden sea caverns. Her work has been read metaphorically, for example as alluding to the human life cycle, but O'Dowd never spells out any desired line of interpretation, preferring to let her paintings and prints - she is also an outstanding printmaker - speak for themselves.
