Oil on canvas Germany, presumably May 1981 Eduard Odenthal (1929-2006) – Painter and distributor, representative of the naïve painting Monogrammed and dated at the lower left and right ‘E.O.’, ‘581.’ Dimensions of canvas: 150 x 79.5 cm Frame: 160 x 89 cm Very good condition Naïve and detailed view of Mainz Cathedral with lively cathedral square, rendered in a color intensive scheme Naïve Art The term Naïve Art is a modern art style which has been acquired by mostly self-taught artists who taught themselves certain artistic knowledge. The naïve painter uses lively, brilliant colors and shows the motifs strongly simplified and abstract. This style was discovered in Paris around 1900. In the late 1920s the term “Naive art” was first used by the German art dealer Wilhelm Uhde (1874-1947). In the late 1930s the artistic movement reached a huge audience through a World's Fair, which exhibited in Paris, Zurich, London and New York. Condition: The painting is in a very good condition with minimal signs of wear. In both upper corners, the canvas forms creases due to mounting on the stretcher. The dimensions of the canvas are 150 x 79.5 cm. The dimensions including the frame measure 160 x 89 cm. Eduard Odenthal (1929 – 2006) The locksmith was also a boxer, carpet salesman and umbrella merchant. In 1965 he started painting as autodidact mainly concentrating on his home landscape, figures from his surroundings as well as city and street landscapes and within a short period he painted more than 100 works.
