He was a friend and encourager to Jack B. Yeats, and Paul Henry acknowledged that it was O'Brien who gave him his first opportunity to show his pictures in Ireland. Until he produced his Studio Catalogue of 1,500 works, Nathaniel Hone's ability with watercolour was unknown, and he worked tirelessly with Sir Hugh Lane in his efforts to improve Dublin - against the city's own wishes, it seemed at the time. At the outset of his career he overcame the handicap of being an upper- class landowner very much under the New Order, going on to become a Governor of the National Gallery of Ireland, President of the United Arts Club, and champion of the Royal Hibernian Academy. From an affluent Cahirmoyle farming family, his move to Dublin saw the Liffey - from source to industrial landscape - replace Limerick as his inspiration in landscape, ameliorated by his farmer's understanding of the Irish countryside.

Dermod O'Brien PRHA (1865-1945)Heading the Stooks (1923)Oil on canvas, 75 x 101cm (29½ x 39¾'')Signed Provenance: The artist's son, Dr. & Mrs. Brendan O’Brien, thence by descent, then sold de Vere’s, Dublin, 25 November 2003, Catalogue No.23, where purchased by present owners.Heading the Stooks was placed on loan by the O’Brien family to the Irish Agricultural Wholesale Society, of which Dermod O’Brien was for a time Vice President.Exhibited: Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, 1913, Catalogue No.1; Royal Scottish Academy, 1915; Boston, Massachusetts (label verso); Cork ROSC ,'Irish Art 1900-1950', December 1975/ January 1976, Catalogue No.102, where lent by the artist's son Dr. Brendan O'Brien. Dermod O’Brien was one of the foremost painters in Ireland in the first half of the twentieth century. He was also the longest serving President of the Royal Hibernian Academy, from 1910 until his death in 1945. His early landscapes, like 'Sheep Shearing', c.1901 (Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane), or 'The Sand Pit', 1908 (Pyms Gallery, London, and thence by descent), were mostly painted at Cahirmoyle, and have a formality, a feeling of being ‘a set piece’, which continues in his work into the 1920s and beyond. Thereafter his canvases often became smaller in size with an increasing ease and spontaneity of execution that reflects his innate love of the countryside. Indeed, writing to his stepmother many years earlier, while on a social visit to London, he commented that all the ‘fizz’ of the city, as he put it, ‘isn’t worth a day in the country at this time of year’. Thomas MacGreevy clearly agreed with O’Brien (‘Fifty Years of Irish Painting,’, Capuchin Annual, 1949, p.503) when he wrote that O’Brien was a landscape painter of ‘invariable accomplishment’ and as time goes on ‘it will be realized that he had a peculiar gift for stamping the natural scene with some quality of Irishness that is not a matter of mere accessories such as boreens, bawns, and thatched white-washed cabins, but of sensitivity to the unique clarity of the Irish atmosphere’.At a time when portraiture was the object of most painters’ determination O’Brien-who of course painted numerous portraits-had a natural preference for the landscape. The setting for 'Heading the Stooks' is almost certainly the O’Brien family estate at Cahirmoyle in County Limerick, where the artist spent much of his youth and where he lived with his wife on and off from 1914 until he sold the property, in 1919. The following year he settled in Dublin. The composition in 'Heading the Stooks', as is usual with O’Brien, is taut, the paint having been applied with deliberation and careful consideration, nothing being left to chance. Overall the emphasis in the scene is on the landscape and only later does one’s attention focus of the work going on.Dr S.B. Kennedy Dr S.B. Kennedy is presently researching the life and career of Dermod O’Brien and would be glad to hear from anyone who may have information about the artist. He can be contacted through Adams. 'Heading the Stooks' is included in Kennedy’s listing of O’Brien’s works.

Illustrated on front cover of catalogueOriginally from Limerick, Dermod O’Brien spent time studying paintings in Europe, particularly in the Louvre, following which he made the decision to paint full time. He studied under Charles Verlat at the Antwerp Academy, where he met Walter Osborne. O’Brien continued his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris and later at the Slade. After completing these studies he shared a studio in Chelsea with Henry Tonks for a time, before moving to Dublin in 1901 and was elected a full member of the RHA six years later. O’Brien went on to serve as president of the Academy from 1910-1945. O’Brien had a significant role in the Irish art world during his life, taking the role of Governor of the National Gallery, supporting Hugh Lane’s project to secure a premises for a modern art gallery, and playing an active part in organising Oireachtas exhibitions, including the first which took place in 1906.

Dermod O'Brien PRHA (1865-1945) Harvesting the Stooks, (c.1915-19) Oil on canvas, 62 x 75cms (24 x 29.5") Inscribed with label verso The label verso helps to date this painting. O'Brien became President of the RHA in 1910 and the RHA moved from it's Abbey Street premises when the entire building was gutted by fire during the Easter Rising of 1916 so this piece is dateable to between 1910 and 1916. The most likely candidate is 'Stacking the Wheat' RHA, 1916, no 316 Although he was one of the foremost portrait painters in Dublin in the early years of the twentieth century, Dermod O'Brien's natural preference for subject was landscape. The setting for Harvesting the Stooks, which is almost certainly the picture of that title which was included in the memorial section of the RHA in 1946, and which probably dates from around 1915-19, is most likely the O'Brien family home at Cahirmoyle, near Ardagh in Co. Limerick. It was there that the artist spent much of his youth and where he lived on and off from 1914 until he sold the property, which he had inherited from his father, in 1919. The following year he settled in Dublin. O'Brien's early landscapes, like Sheep Shearing, c.1901 (Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane), or The Sand Pit, 1908, were mostly painted at Cahirmoyle. They have a formality, a feeling of being a 'set piece', which continues in his work even into the 1920s. Thereafter his canvases usually became smaller in size with an increasing ease and spontaneity of execution that reflects his innate love of the countryside. Indeed, writing to his stepmother many years earlier, while on a social visit to London, he commented that all the 'fizz' of the city, as he put it, 'isn't worth a day in the country at this time of year'. The composition in Harvesting the Stooks is taut, the paint has been applied with deliberation and careful consideration, nothing is left to chance. The emphasis in the scene is the landscape per se; only later does one's attention focus on the work going on. The setting is similar to that in The Sand Pit, but viewed possibly from the opposite direction, and the trees at the right hand side resemble those depicted in the earlier work. The Arcadian mood of the scene is typical of O'Brien's early period, the serene sky conveying a sense of everlasting tranquility that has no echo of the growing political uncertainties-which greatly affected the O'Brien family-of Ireland at that time. The artist's label is on the reverse with his address given as the RHA, Dublin, but there is no title. (S. B. Kennedy is presently researching the life and career of Dermod O'Brien and would be glad to hear from anyone who may have information about the artist. He can be contacted through Adams. Harvesting the Stooks is numbered 0694 in Kennedy's listing of O'Brien's works.)

O'Brien, who had inherited the Cahirmoyle Estate in Co. Limerick always prefered the palette to the plough hence the title of Lennox Robinson's book on him "The Palette and the Plough". Dermod O'Brien used the Ploughman as influence for his banknote design for the Irish Currency Commission.
