Mariano Obiols Delgado (c.1860), Puente de Segovia, 1898

    Est: €2,720 - €3,400

Oil on canvas Madrid, Spain, 1898 Mariano Obiols Delgado (c. 1860-active until 1911) – Spanish painter and illustrator Signed, dated and inscribed lower right ‘M.O. Delgado. Madrid / 1898.’ Dimensions: 40 x 26.5 cm Frame: 60 x 46.5 cm Characteristic genre scene at the Puente de Segovia, the oldest bridge in Madrid; the Spanish artist Mariano Obiols Delgado was famous for his virtuoso genre scenes that he preferably located in front of real sceneries such as the Puente de Segovia in Madrid Condition: There is a small damage of the canvas in the upper left corner. Besides, the canvas is slightly dented at the upper left part of the sky. The bright parts of the ground reveal a tiny hole in the canvas and clear areas of craquelure. The stretcher measures 40 x 26.5 cm and the frame 60 x 46.5 cm. Mariano Obiols Delgado (c. 1860-active until 1911) In his early years, Manuel or Mariano Obiols Delgado was a disciple of Martí Alsina, in whose studio he painted landscapes with figures. He later moved to Paris, where painted ‘La Porte Saint-Denis’ which was celebrated by the Parisian critics. In 1890, he moved to Seville, specializing in Andalusian genre painting. He worked as an illustrator for various magazines. In a second stay in Paris, he painted cityscapes of the Quarter Latin and the Montmartre and some genre scenes in the Bois de Boulogne. However, it is especially Delgado’s Andalusian work for which he is known today. The works mostly depict figures in landscapes that are captured especially in Seville. In these works he approaches the style of Baldomero Galofré, who he met along with other genre painters in Seville, including García Ramos, García Rodriguez and Jiménez Aranda. Obiols Delgado signed mostly with ‘M.O. Delgado’ and painted on canvas and cardboard. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
