Adolf Obermüllner, Forest of the House of Schwarzenberg c. 1890

      Est: €2,240 - €2,800

Oil on canvas, relined Austria, circa 1890 Adolf Obermüllner (1833-1898) - Austrian painter and important landscapist Verso with an old label inscribed 'Aus den Forsten des Fürsten Schwarzenberg Ausgang des Urwaldes, welchen der Fürst stehen ließ, da Schiller seine Räuber da dichtete / A. Obermüllner / Grosser Landschaftsmeister, auch mit Custus in Wien, in der Galerie des Fürsten Schwarzenberg, Wien' Simple gold colored frame Overall dimensions, framed: 67.5 x 52 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Southern Germany Idyllic view of a forest edge; landscape paintings by Adolf Obermüllner fetch up to 8,000 euros at international auctions The present painting by Adolf Obermüllner depicts an idyllic forest. The Austrian painter has rendered the shrubbery in the foreground and the trees rising in the background in subtle color nuances. Obermüllner was a talented landscape painter who managed to capture the unspoilt nature of Upper Austria in his evocative paintings. In this manner he has skillfully depicted the quaint scenery here. According to an old label on the reverse of the frame the woods shown here belonged to a forest area owned by the noble family of Schwarzenberg. It is said that Friedrich Schiller wrote his drama 'The Robbers' here. The painting is in good condition. The canvas has been relined. There are two tiny retouchings (only visible under UV light) as well as craquelure due to age. The painting bears an old label on the verso inscribed 'Aus den Forsten des Fürsten Schwarzenberg Ausgang des Urwaldes, welchen der Fürst stehen ließ, da Schiller seine Räuber da dichtete / A. Obermüllner / Grosser Landschaftsmeister, auch mit Custus in Wien, in der Galerie des Fürsten Schwarzenberg, Wien' (From the forests of Prince Schwarzenberg, the edges of the jungle, which the prince left standing, as Schiller wrote his Robbers there / A. Obermüllner / Great landscape painter, also with Custus in Vienna, in the gallery of Prince Schwarzenberg, Vienna). The frame shows light wear. The framed work measures 67.5 x 52 cm, the stretcher frame measures 57 x 41.5 cm. Adolf Obermüllner (1833-1898) At the age of 18 years Adolf Obermüllner attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and was a pupil of the landscape painter Franz Steinfeld. His early works, shown at an academic exhibition, were awarded a first prize. Obermüllner then settled in Munich where he was taught by the landscape and nature painter Richard Zimmermann. In the following years Obermüllner undertook study trips through Western Europe. When he returned to Austria in 1860, he settled in Vienna. As an alpine painter he quickly gained recognition, and in 1861 he was engaged by the Austrian Alpine Association to document an alpine and glacier expedition. Obermüllner's paintings are often of exceptionally large format and are defined by a skillful brushwork and atmospheric composition. Works by Obermüllner are held in the gallery of Prince Schwarzenberg in Vienna. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
