    • CARLS NYS (19th century). Cleopatra. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner.
      Oct. 10, 2023

CARLS NYS (19th century). Cleopatra. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner.

      Est: €20,000 - €25,000

CARLS NYS (19th century). "Cleopatra". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 115 x 135,5 cm; 155 x 173 cm (frame). Inscribed in an ornamented interior, a woman plays with several cats, oblivious to the viewer's gaze. Both the style of the room in which she is depicted and her clothing indicate that she is a young Egyptian woman. Perhaps Cleopatra, who became a myth of femininity and captivated the society of her time and later generations. However, although we do not know the exact identity of the female protagonist, it is clear that the author has based his work on depictions of Odalisques. Her posture, her bare breast and the mischievous gesture she adopts are reminiscent of those highly erotic representations that became popular in the 19th century. The representation of this type of woman in the West was a recurring theme throughout the 19th century. They were especially frequent in the paintings of the Orientalist trend, which should be understood as one of the currents that fuelled European art in the 19th century, coinciding with the triumph of the capitalist bourgeoisie and the imperialist countries, especially England and France. It was provoked by a romantic vision and developed an aesthetic in search of a fantastic and free flight through time and space. Orientalism was born in the 19th century as a consequence of the romantic spirit of escape in time and space. The first orientalists sought to reflect the lost, the unattainable, in a dramatic journey destined from the outset to fail. Like Flaubert in "Salambó", the painters painted detailed portraits of the Orient and imagined pasts, recreated down to the last millimetre, but ultimately unknown and idealised. Orientalism should be understood as one of the currents that fed European art in the 19th century, coinciding with the triumph of the capitalist bourgeoisie and the imperialist countries, especially England and France. Within the Romantic rejection of time itself, a fantastic and free flight in time and space developed, towards antiquity and towards an Orient that stretched from Spain to Russia, passing through North Africa and even reaching Japan. If Chinese art dominated the 18th century and Japanese art dazzled the Impressionists, the Middle East will be the new discovery. Starting with Ingres' beautiful and unattainable odalisques, with such pale skin and elegant gestures that they always lead one to think of a captive Christian princess, never an Arab woman, the various schools of painting developed a whole new iconography which sought to recreate in a fantastic way - since nothing is known about the Orient - a world forbidden to Westerners and full of attractions. The painters recreated these exotic scenes in minute detail, seeking to serve as a window onto the unknown through an almost photographic reproduction that lends verisimilitude to the narratives and stimulates the imagination of the European spectator.
