ARVID NYHOLM SWEDISH/AMERICAN, NEW YORK, CHICAGO, 1866-1927 WOMAN SEATED AT HER VANITY Oil on board Lower left signed: A. Nyholm Catalogue note: Arvid Frederick Nyholm was born in Stockholm in 1866 and studied there at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts and privately under impressionist master Anders Zorn. Nyholm immigrated to the United States in 1891, settling in New York, where he gave art lessons and painted commissioned portraits. Nyholm exhibited at the National Academy of Design's annual shows in 1897 and 1898, and with the New York Water Color Society. In 1903, the artist moved permanently to Chicago, the adoptive home to numerous Swedish-born artists. Initially, Nyholm exhibited with the short-lived Swedish-American Art Association, the Palette and Chisel Club, the Chicago Society of Artists and the Chicago Water Color Club. Beginning in 1905, his works appeared almost every year in the Art Institute's annual exhibitions of works by Chicago artists. Nyholm traveled to Paris in 1907 for further study at the Académie Colarossi and visited his former teacher Anders Zorn in Sweden; he returning to Europe for study and personal reasons in 1912. Back in Chicago, Nyholm took a studio in the Tree Studios building on the city's Near North Side. During the 1920s, commissions took the artist to New York and Philadelphia, while in Chicago he painted numerous portraits of the city's meatpacking magnates for the Saddle and Sirloin Club and continued to exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. His solo exhibition at the O'Brien and Jacobus Galleries in Chicago in 1925 was enthusiastically received by critics. Source: Essay by Wendy Greenhouse, Phd., M. Christine Schwartz Collection
