He reportedly sold the idea to King Christian VIII by presciently noting, "When the people are amusing themselves, they don't think about politics." This poster, by Denmark's foremost illustrator of the period, celebrates Tivoli's 70th anniversary, with the Japanese Tower on the left and the Moorish Palace on the right. (Event)

Chevillard. ALEX NYGAARD (1877-1953) Cond C+/Restored tears and losses in lower text area. The trajectory of the Farman plane as it plunges through the less-than-friendly skies would seem to indicate something of a rarity for an unspecified Danish air show-a misspelling of the star attraction's name. That would appear to be the case, however, as this steep decent in this sort of aircraft was precisely the trademark approach taken by Maurice Chevilliard, a famed early French aviator who made this well-known breathtaking spiral flight towards the crowd as his opening maneuver at air meets before making his initial landing. 25 1/4 x 33 7/8 in./64 x 86 cm
