There is something so intensely poetic about hid landscape – even in its abstractions, one could easily point out the nature with which Nuyda (who was an avid lepidopterist) often spends his free time in. His unique sense of color derives from his innate interest in butterflies, something that was passed down to him by his father and uncles. “In art, there are unusual colors that just can’t go with each other but they exist in a butterfly,” says Nuyda as written by Jay Bautista in the 2017 Vision Petron FOLIO. “For example black and yellow. With a thin line of gray, you can put them together. How light to dark is. You can witness that in a butterfly, most colors exist in them already.” Both Search Study 1 (1984) and Abstract (2005) feature this sense of color; streaks of colors that are seemingly clashing meet harmoniously under the brush of Nuyda. These daubs of paint he transforms into a truly unique vision, with each brush stroke serving as an enigmatic invitation for the viewers to dive deep into the alluring waves of Nuyda’s landscapes. Search Mindscape Series signed and dated 1978 (lower right and verso) oil on canvas 36” x 24” (91 cm x 61 cm) WRITE UP Justin Nuyda Mapping the Psyche QUOTE: You cannot go wrong with nature, it is always right —NATIONAL ARTIST CESAR LEGASPI TO JUSTIN NUYDA. ARTICLE BY JAY BAUTISTA ENTITLED “THE TWO LIVES OF JUSTIN NUYDA,” 2018 J ustin Nuyda’s ethereal landscapes are born out of his lifelong love for nature and butterflies. Hailing from a family of lepidopterists (or lovers of butterflies), it is no surprise that the young Nuyda would take to the forest like a duck to water. “The earliest butterfly I caught was when I was in grade school,” says Nuyda as recalled by Jay Bautista in his article The Two Lives of Justin Nuyda. “I was 6, I even cried. I pointed it to my father, di ko nahuli but nahuli nya [I can’t catch it but he can]. At 7-8 years, I would tag along, hawak ko yung braso ng tatay ko, baka maiwanan ako sa gubat [I held onto my father’s arm because I might get lost in the forest].” Throughout the years, Nuyda continued traveling through the woods to document, catch, and appreciate the butterflies, a self-proclaimed first love of his. The often contradicting colors and movements he observed in nature-inspired and bled into his multiple depictions of landscapes. “In art, there are unusual colors that just can’t go with each other but they exist in a butterfly,” he says. “For example black and yellow. With a thin line of gray, you can put them together. How light to dark is. You can witness that in a butterfly, most colors exist in them already.” These shades of black, gray, and yellow are evident in this 1978 untitled work. A few years after he was conferred as one of the early recipients of the Thirteen Artists Award in 1972, this piece is reminiscent of the early sun rays piercing through the still-dark dawn skies. It is a view Nuyda probably saw a thousand times as he hikes through the mountains in search of his butterflies. The play of light and dark along with the striking yellow rays creates a magnificent picture. The works of Justin Nuyda have been described by critics as poetic. Indeed, through his masterful use of colors and lyrical landscapes, the spontaneity with which Nuyda paints his works elevates their poeticism. “I am a very spontaneous painter,” he said in an interview with the Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “I paint as I go [and] I compose as I paint. I create based on intuition and feeling most of the time.” This freedom that he allows his works to embody creates an oeuvre that is as deeply personal to him as it would be to the piece’s viewer, their brushstrokes emphasizing the dreamlike qualities they imbibe. Nude signed and dated 1995 (lower right) oil on canvas 32" x 40" (81 cm x 102 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by the heirs of the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Justin Nuyda’s 1995 Nude combines his impressive grasp on the female anatomy and the dream-like poeticism of his Mindscape series, an indication of the creativity that would mark the artist as one of the country’s foremost modernists. The lot at hand depicts four figures, naked as their name day, engaged in some sort of dance with their bodies curved and pressed at the hip. Their faces are not drawn, urging the viewers to focus on the tangle of their limbs and the way light hits every curve and crevice of their bodies. However, Nuyda leaves the commonly used realistic coloring behind when it comes to his palette – instead, he creates a soft glow around the bodies, mimicking a candle’s light as the glow slowly disperses as it moves further from the work’s center. The furthest limbs – the women's legs and arms – slowly dissolve into the background, creating an almost ethereal effect when viewed, as though the women are floating with no care in the world. The spontaneity with which Nuyda approaches his works elevates the poeticism that lies within them. “I am a very spontaneous painter,” he said. “I paint as I go [and] I compose as I paint. I create based on intuition and feeling most of the time.” This freedom in his process allows Nuyda to create a deeply personal work that would resonate with a person just as intimately as it did for the people before and after them. Search Mindscape signed and dated 2004 (lower right) oil on paper 21" x 28" (53 cm x 71 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by the heirs of the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Among Justin Nuyda’s well-known creations, his Mindscape series stands out as one of his most famous. A "picture of the sights" as his website puts it, Nuyda's search for the landscape of the mind resulted in a myriad of paintings that put the abstractionist on the Philippine history books, all vastly different as one’s internal life is wont to do. In this Mindscape piece, a 2004 work entitled Search Mindscape, Nuyda's first love shows herself. Although an artist through and through, Nuyda proclaimed that collecting and studying butterflies (a lepidopterist) is his first love, his interest starting young with his father's and uncle's influences. Soon, the young Nuyda joins his family as they explore the Philippine forests in search of butterflies new and old. He continues even when alone, so deep was his admiration for Mother Nature. This Search Mindscape echoes a possible trip Nuyda may have undertaken. With the clear blue background and brown trunk-like abstractions, it is not hard to perceive the skies under which Nuyda toiled to explore previously uncharted places or the trees that served as guides. Nuyda’s Mindscape series is as much the viewers’ as it is Nuyda’s. “This is why I entitle my artworks, ‘Search Mindscape,’” he said in a 2021 Manilla Bulletin article. “There will always be a narrative behind my artwork that will be challenging to express [...] On the other hand, viewers, in their individual ways, can define and redefine, with open- mindedness, the mindscapes that I paint.” (Hannah Valiente)

With each mindscape unique and personal to the individual, Nuyda’s ethereal works explore the gripping inner world that constantly shifts throughout time. The 1988 Frozen in Time is a view into a winding inner landscape. Using a monochromatic icy blue, Frozen in Time contains the sweeping hills and valleys of someone’s mind. Blue often connotes wisdom, serenity, and stability but icy hue used by Nuyda twists the meaning of the color – it is now cold and nigh unforgiving. The mindscape is now a frozen desert to be mindful of. Justin Nuyda is known as one of the pillars of Philippine modern art. An avid lepidopterist, both the butterflies and nature itself are a mainstay in his works. (Hannah Valiente)

PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF A VERY DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN Mindscape: Moods of Batanes signed and dated 2008 (lower right) oil on canvas 36" x 48" (91 cm x 122 cm) Leon Gallery wishes to thank the artist’s estate for confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist WRITE UP: Nuyda’s abstractions serve as a conduit to his internal world, rendering visible the landscapes of his psyche. These mindscapes are more than mere aesthetic ventures; they embody a philosophical inquiry into perception and cognition. This space does not merely depict a scene but encapsulates a dynamic process of seeking and perceiving, a visual metaphor for the cognitive act of exploration. Tapping into his experience as a lepidopterist, the artist creates his renowned mindscape that blends the ornate patterns and vibrant colors of butterfly wings. This osmotic fusion of art and science results in a hypnotizing representation of the mind's terrain, where the delicate beauty of butterflies intertwines with the vastness of the natural world. "Mindscape: Moods of Batanes” offers a panoramic interpretation of Batanes’ topography, a locale renowned for picturesque landscapes. Through a deft manipulation of chromatic and formal elements, the artist constructs an immersive experience that transcends mere representation, inviting a contemplation of the scene’s intrinsic charisma while endowing it with an enigmatic allure. PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF A VERY DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN Untitled (Mindscape Search Series) signed and dated 1991 (lower left) oil on canvas 30" x 30" (76 cm x 76 cm) Leon Gallery wishes to thank the artist’s estate for confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist WRITE UP: Justin Nuyda’s first and greatest love lies past his canvases and paint brushes – it lies within nature, through the iridescent wings of butterflies. Along with his father and uncles, young Nuyda would roam through their farms to catch butterflies with their exploration eventually growing to forests and mountains where previously undiscovered butterflies roam freely. An avid lepidopterist, Nuyda’s collection grew to become the fourth-largest collection of Philippine butterflies in the whole world, attracting attention from all corners of the world. This work was created in 1991 – two years before Nuyda published the first issue of his journal Fil-Kulisap – and it bears the labor of his love for butterflies. Using his gestural brushstrokes, Nuyda depicts the mountains he so often frequents in search of his butterflies. In a wide shot, Nuyda offers a unique perspective of his ballpark – from the light blue skies to the white clouds down to the rich brown soil of the mountain, Nuyda fuses the delicate beauty of the butterflies with the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. Nuyda’s abstractions are an ethereal view of the vastly personal inner mindscapes. Through his deft manipulation of elements, his works are imbued with a deeply personal charm and a captivating allure that invites a closer introspection. (Hannah Valiente)

Reminiscent of Nuyda's masterpieces, the female form is delicately portrayed in an ethereal, almost ghostly manner, transcending conventional representations. Nuyda's masterful strokes breathe life into shapes and curves, bringing a harmonious fusion of colors and forms that bring the artwork to life. In this dreamscape, women's bodies become a canvas of poetic expression. Critics have aptly described his work as "poetic," and nowhere is this more evident than in the contemplative gaze upon "Nude." It is an open invitation to lose oneself in the misty elegance of the artwork, where each stroke has its own narrative. In the same year as the creation of Kambal, critic Rod Paras-Perez described Malang’s brushwork as “intimate…with a measured sense of order.” Kambal showcases Malang’s impeccable sense of control – his definite strokes and melodic relationship with colors give the piece his signature painterly charm – a quaint outlook of the Philippines’s folk scenery. (Hannah Valiente) Nuyda's artistic journey, rooted in a Fine Arts degree from the University of Santo Tomas in 1966, has been adorned with accolades. Nuyda's legacy is etched in his ability to beckon observers into a world where reality and dreams coalesce in a mesmerizing dance of colors and shapes. (Ysabella Vistan)

An avid lepidopterist, Nuyda has spent his childhood and beyond exploring the Philippine forest with his father and uncles who had passed down their interest to the impressionable Nuyda. They would climb mountains, chasing down butterflies to study and collect. On the way, Nuyda would encounter the majestic beauty of the skyline from a higher altitude and the beautiful colors on a butterfly’s wings. “In art, there are unusual colors that just can’t go with each other but they exist in a butterfly,” says Nuyda as written by Jay Bautista in the 2017 Vision Petron FOLIO. “For example black and yellow. With a thin line of gray you can put them together. How light to dark is. You can witness that in a butterfly, most colors exist in them already.” That unique and natural sense of color is showcased in his 1975 Search 7515, created three years after his Thirteen Artists Award conferment. At first glance, the colored daubs and streaks remind one of the blue skies and the brown desert as far as the eye can see. It also reminds the viewers of the blue and brown shades found in his beloved butterfly’s wings. Nuyda’s works are a love letter to the nature he often finds himself conferred with. Through his abstractions, he finds an internal world in which his mindscapes could take place. “He paints a picture of the sights and captures the sounds within a mind that is not lost, but simply in search,” says his website. Search 7515 portrays a lovely sky that reflects the restless search undertaken by wanderers. (Hannah Valiente)

A founding member of the famed Saturday Group, Nuyda rubbed elbows with other geniuses of the Philippine art scene including National Artist for Painting H.R Ocampo and famed artist-writer Alfredo Roces. Glimpses of Tagaytay Highlands, the lot at hand, depicts the titular Tagaytay in Nuyda’s ethereal style. Known as the second Summer Capital of the Philippines for its cool climate, Tagaytay is a known tourist destination for anyone who wants a reprieve from the hot humid weather. The lot at hand illustrates the mountainous terrain of Tagaytay, its sweeping hills and steep valleys translated into Nuyda’s lyrical canvas. Utilizing a careful balance of color and form, Nuyda gives the viewer a panoramic view of the mountain line, masterfully recreating the charisma of a scene and giving it a fresh enigmatic twist. His works are highly nuanced and very dreamlike, often toeing the line of the real and the surreal. Nuyda takes the objective reality and molds it into a phantasmagoric vision. What is it that exists and what is it like to exist? These are the primary questions that concern metaphysics and the primary concerns that renowned visual artist Justin Nuyda explores in his introspective works. Justin Nuyda is always in constant search for mindscapes – this is how his own website describes the leading modern and contemporary abstract painter. His career spans over five decades, starting when he received his fine arts degree from the University of Santo Tomas. As an artist, Nuyda was awarded with many accolades including the Cultural Center of the Philippines’s Thirteen Artists Award in 1972. His Mindscape series firmly cemented him as one of the leading Filipino painters. Magoroh Maruyama in his Current Anthropology article described mindscape as “a structure of reasoning, cognition, perception, conceptualization, design, planning, and decision making that may vary from one individual [...] to another.” In other words, mindscape, quite literally, refers to one’s mind and how they react, plan, and design their lives. This incredibly personal method of thinking means that one’s mindscape is different from each other and this unique perspective of mindscapes is made tangible through Nuyda’s series. Nuyda’s abstraction takes on a dreamlike and charming personality. His oeuvre is full of colorful landscapes that are a combination of intense brushstrokes and striking palette, each eliciting a deeply personal reaction from its viewers. Abstract for him is governed only by the limits of one’s own imagination; it is not looking through reality to find the dream but finding the dream in reality. In every work, Nuyda sets out to find the surreal in the real. In this 1989 work entitled Mindscape-Search “Counting Time by the Winds,” Nuyda’s refined grace and mastery of the landscape is in full display. Like the title describes, this piece is born primarily from the artist’s mind instead of the physical act of seeing and perceiving. In shades of blue and orange, Nuyda masterfully conjures the charismatic enigma of the mountains on a sunny day. His painting process is as spontaneous and personal as his works. “The concept behind the artwork develops as I paint and then concludes when I lift the paintbrush away from the canvas,”He said to Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “I paint as I go. I compose as I paint.” This process ensures the intimately poetic nature of his works. Nuyda’s works deal with identity and change, the beauty and the barren. His mastery in colors and his distinctive approach to his works have cemented his place in the art history books. (Hannah Valiente)

WRITE UPThe ethereal in the ordinary, the surreal in the real – Justin Nuyda perceives abstraction not just as an exercise of going beyond what is seen but finding the dream in reality. “His abstractions are trembling on the brink of reality,” says his website, “from turbulent to placid [...] from barren to beautiful.” In this 2000 work entitled Nude, Nuyda depicts the female body in a dreamlike state. Using soft, smudged colors, the bodies look almost psychedelic and otherworldly. In his masterful hands, the women’s bodies are drawn in sensuous shapes and curves, combining colors and shapes to bring this artwork through life as though peering through hazy and vivacious glasses. Art critics have described Nuyda’s art as “poetic” and as one looks at Nude, it is not hard to wax poetic and get lost in the soft misty artwork. His works, drawing inspiration from the physical beauty of the natural world, are populated with brilliantly curated arrays of colors that seem to glow under the luminosity of an inviting and unnerving radiance. He was spontaneous as an artist, composing as he painted, only concluding an artwork once the paintbrush was lifted from the canvas. As per an Esquire article, his love for art was not limited to creating with brushes and paints, it extended to the art of collecting butterflies. “For my art, I get some colors from butterflies. Do you know that butterflies have unusual color combinations? You usually won’t do those combinations. It’s a mistake,” he said, “but when you see them in butterflies, ang ganda. The color composition, saturation, gradation—ang ganda.” One can assume that a long history of butterfly-catching adventures means that he had decades worth of stories, with each butterfly in his collection holding a special memory. Indeed he was a one of a kind artist, and as Esquire wrote, “it takes a special sort of eye to see the beauty in these fascinating creatures.” (Isabella Romarate)

Nuyda was also a founding member of the Saturday Group, an artist collective founded by National Artist for Painting H.R Ocampo and famed artist-writer Alfredo Roces. Aside from being a master of the brush and canvas, Nuyda is also one of the country’s top Lepidopterists or butterfly and moth experts. Nuyda’s fascination with the winged insects was cultivated by a shared familial fascination, wherein his father and uncles were pioneers of Filipino Lepidopterology. In 1957, he was trained by his fatherin-law Colin Threadway in the ways of butterfly and moth identification. This would then lead Nuyda to take multiple sojourns to Mindoro, Palawan, and Northern Luzon in search of indigenous and brand new species. In 1975, a newly discovered species of butterfly was found within the thickets of Mt. Kitanglad in Bukidnon was named after him. However, beyond the formal relationships between artistic elements, the oeuvres of Nuyda are also deeply rooted in nature. He often draws inspiration from a variety of sceneries, such as landscapes, and uses them as the foundation for his abstract compositions. His works have, more often than not, charmed audiences with their allure and dream-like character. It is in Nuyda’s vision that these surrealist pieces are conceived, and by his brush they come to life with a distinct, refined grace. Though abstraction was definitely not a novel concept during his era, Nuyda was able to redefine the genre by repositioning abstraction’s primary entry point of perception to cognition. Meaning to say, Nuyda figures are primarily born out of the artist’s mind rather than the physical act of seeing and perceiving. His works also feature a careful balance of color and form, giving the viewer a nuanced illusion of space that effectively says more about the viewer than the work itself. This philosophy is most apparent in his peculiarly magical landscapes that comprise his Mindscape series. Nuyda never fails to capture the enigmatic charisma of a setting — his brush, masterfully recreating the essence of a scene he envisions. (J.D.)

            Est: ₱800,000 - ₱1,040,000

Justin Nuyda (1944 - 2022) Abstract signed and dated 1974 (lower left) oil on canvas 25” x 35” (60 cm x 89 cm) With over five decades of experience in art, Justin Nuyda has often been regarded as one of Philippine Modernism’s foundations. A graduate of the University of Santo Tomas’ Fine Arts Program, Nuyda was one of the first recipients of the CCP Thirteen Artists Award in 1972. Though he is now known for his abstract works, Nuyda’s early exhibits often featured portraits and nudes, showing his seemingly universal aptitude for the arts. Painting for more than 40 years, he is best known for abstract works that depict the soft undulating motions of clouds, mists, butterfly wings, and seafoam and waves hovering over nether horizons. These paintings induce calm meditation and introspection through Nuyda’s signature use of wide and solid brushstrokes. While one can argue that Nuyda’s works fall under the aforementioned umbrella term with its impressionistic and gestural visual cues that are undoubtedly hallmarks of the age-old artistic movement, a closer look reveals that his works seem to occupy an unusual and otherworldly divide between the purely abstract and sensuous and the distinctly representational and realistic. Although his works are heavily populated with a brilliantly curated array of colors and shades that seem to glow under the luminosity of an inviting yet unnerving radiance, his subjects are unmistakably taken from the material beauty of nature and everyday life. Far from the purely impressionistic stance of the abstract and too uncanny for the likes of realism, one can only describe Nuyda’s style as a pioneering venture that is incredibly distinct and uniquely his.

Justin Nuyda (1944 - 2022) Search signed and dated 1978 (lower right and ve rso) oil on canvas 40" x 30" (101 cm x 76 cm) Often referred to as one of the pillars of Philippine Modern Art is the revered abstractionist Justin Nuyda, whose novel experimentations in light, color, and technique redefined what was possible within the medium of painting. This 1978 oil on canvas piece titled Search showcases his earlier experimentations with abstraction. A sense of tranquility fills the canvas, accentuated by the gradients of the sepia palette. A theory tells that every human being’s heart beats the rhythm of home. This explains why Nuyda is in constant search for mindscapes, painting pictures of the sights and capturing sounds within a mind that is not lost but simply in search. Beyond the formal relationships between hues, tones, and lights, the works of Nuyda are also deeply rooted in our physical and natural world. He often draws inspiration from a variety of scenes, such as landscapes, and uses them as the foundation for his abstract paintings. Far from the merely impressionistic stance of the abstract and much too uncanny for the likes of realism, his style can only be described as a pioneering venture that is incredibly distinct and unique. Art critics have often described Nuyda’s art as poetic. And although the master visual artist passed away recently, his five-decade-long celebrated career in the arts will forever remain in the minds and hearts of the art community. (P.I.R.)

This 1978 piece harkens back to the earlier experimentations with the abstraction of Nuyda. A reflection of a dream-like atmosphere distinctly marked by bold and broad brush strokes, this painting brings forth awareness to his creative attempt to photograph a picture of sight as well as capture the sound within the peripherals of the mind of what it tries to find — not lost, but simply searching. Although the canvases of Nuyda are populated with a well-curated array of hues that seem to glow under the luminosity of an inviting yet unnerving radiance, his inspirations were clearly drawn from the beauty of nature. Inviting and alluring, this piece highlights the rhythmic nature of the artist’s oeuvre as one that is vigorous and brimming with life. (P.I.R.)

Justin Nuyda (1944 - 2022) Blue Landscape signed (lower right) oil on canvas 6 1/2" x 9 5/8" (17 cm x 24 cm) Justin Nuyda gained prominent recognition for his abstract paintings that depict breathtaking dream-like landscapes. His oeuvres exude a cerebral quality to them, and the scenes he committed to his canvases are portals to how he perceived the world. In his celebrated career that spanned over five decades, many have struggled to determine which discipline he was committed to and what sort of art he created. Although his works are filled with a brilliantly curated array of colors and shades that seem to glow under the luminosity of an inviting yet unnerving radiance, his subjects are unmistakably drawn from the material beauty of nature and everyday life. As a spontaneous painter, Nuyda's artistic renditions never fail to capture the enigmatic essence of the scenery — his masterful brushwork displays the fascination of the setting. Alongside art, Justin Nuyda was also a lepidopterist specializing in Philippine butterflies. He began collecting butterflies when he was seven years old and has described over a hundred species and subspecies. This passion for jeweled insects and the terrain they thrive in was a key source of inspiration for his masterpieces. (P.I.R.)

It forms an ambivalent figure of the clouds, a lake, and its shore, and the other spaces in between, giving a thunderous silence yet vibrantly calm picturesque image. Icy and rigid, the shape still maintains a natural flow. Nuyda paints an imagery that is both familiar and obscure, as if projections from a dream that has now passed but continues to linger behind one’s mind.
