Elizabeth Nyumi grew up near Jupiter Well, where she lived a nomadic life until she walked up the Canning Stock Route and into the old Balgo Mission in her late teens. In 1988, more than 40 years later she began painting at the Warlayirti Art Centre. Her subject is her father's country, Parwalla, far to the south of Balgo Hills in the Great Sandy Desert. Parwalla is a large swampy area that fills with water after the wet season and consequently produces an abundance of bush foods. The majority of Nyumi's paintings show the different bush foods, including kantjilyi (bush raisin), pura (bush tomato), and minyili (seed). The whitish colours represent the spinifex that grows strong and seeds after the wet season rains. These seeds are white in colour and grow so thickly they obscure the ground and other plants below. Elizabeth Nyumi was the foremost of the second-generation Balgo artists, on whose success the Warlayirti art centre at Balgo Hills has depended. More than any other artist, she extended the reputation of the Balgo women artists with her refreshingly distinct and individual depictions of the country.

Elizabeth Nyumi was foremost amongst the second-generation Balgo Hills artists, on whose success the Warlayirti art centre at Balgo Hills after the late 1990s. More than any other, she carried on and extended the reputation of the Balgo women artists with her refreshingly distinct and individual depictions of the country of her family. Parwalla was her father’s country. It is a large, swampy area dominated by sandhills that lies far to the south of Balgo Hills in the Great Sandy Desert near Kiwirrkurra. After the wet season Parwalla fills with water and becomes abundant with bush foods. These include bush raisins (kantiliyi), bush tomatoes (Pura), and a variety of seeds (Minyli). Men and women collect the bush raisin together. It is high in protein and is thought to have beneficial healing properties, especially for women. Uniting all of these important bush foods, Elizabeth employed various shades of yellow and white paint to depict the surrounding Spinifex grass, which grows strong and seeds after the wet season.

Invited to participate in On Reason and Emotion, the 2004 Biennale of Sydney, Elizabeth Nyumi presented canvases that reflected her strong personal style. As with our work the paintings in the Biennale had thick impasto dotting that built up fields of texture, heavily laden with white or cream where motifs of coolomons, boomwerangs, digging sticks and bush tucker standout. In the catalogue which accompanied the Biennale, Hetti Perkins described Nyumi's paintings as expressing 'more than a nostalgic yearning for the past. The arrangement of formal elements in her works articulates the physical connection of desert dwellers to their country. The act of painting Tjukurrpa as an expression of knowledge and creativity reveals a blueprint for physical survival and at the same time regenerates the transcendent energy of the Tjukurrpa. Thus, Nyumi's paintings afford an unequivocal understanding of the symbiotic relationship of Aboriginal people and country.’1 The accompanying certificate of authenticity states in part: ’This painting depicts the country known as Parwalla, which is Nyumi's father’s country. This country is far to the south of Balgo in the Great Sandy Desert, west of Kiwirrkurra, and is dominated by Tali (sandhills). ESSAY: A closely associated painting to Parwalla, 2001, by the same title, painted in the same year, was selected for the 2004 Biennale of Sydney. Together with two other works by Nyumi, it was shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art as part of a large international group exhibition. In the accompanying catalogue essay, Hetti Perkins defines this as the most resolved series of paintings in her ongoing preoccupation with the country of her childhood.1 Indeed, this work exemplifies the physical and spiritual connection of the artist to her country, in a symbiotic relationship that informs the entirety of Nyumis artistic output. Parwalla is the country where Nyumi lived as a child with her mother, before losing her in a tragic accident. After this, Nyumi led a nomadic existence with her father and family group, ultimately settling in the Wirrimanu community at Balgo, where she commenced painting in 1987 for the Warlayirti Artists cooperative. The symbols depicted in Nyumis works are inherently feminine. She represents campsites, bush tucker, native flora and fauna and womens food-gathering implements. These themes are rendered in a delicate, jewel-like style and soft palette of pastel yellows, oranges, pinks and creams, removed from the vigorous, painterly style and bright colours idiosyncratic to Balgo. Perkins highlights the influence of Nyumis matrilineal Pintupi heritage, and associates her with that extraordinary generation of desert women artists, beginning in the 1980s with Emily Kame Kngwarreye, followed by Pintupi artists at Kintore and Kiwirrkurra and spectacularly reinvented by the women artists at Warlayirti.2 Indigenous artists from several remote communities and urban Aboriginal artists had been represented in previous Biennales, but this was the first time for an artist from Balgo. 1. Elizabeth Nyumi was a young girl travelling with her older brothers, Brandy and Patrick Tjungurrayi, when they encountered a helicopter at Natawalu in 1957. It was the first time Nyumi had seen white men. She eventually travelled north to Balgo mission where she lived for many years before moving to Billiluna with her husband, senior law-man and painter Palmer Gordon, and children. Born near Jupiter Well on the Canning Stock Route in her mother's country (Nyumi) close to Kiwirrkurra in Western Australia, Nyumi is a strong culture woman, dancer and advocate of the importance of traditional culture. She is an enthusiastic teacher of culture to children, ensuring the traditional dances and songs are kept alive, also advising nurses at health clinics about traditional bush medicines. In 1987, Nyumi started painting for Warlayirti Artists, the community run art centre at Balgo Hills and is considered to be a founding figure in the Wirrimanu women's painting movement of the 1980s and 1990s. Nyumi held her first solo exhibition Parwalla at Raft Artspace in 2001. In this work Nyumi addresses Parwalla, the country of her childhood. Contrasting with the conventional Balgo Hills palette of blistering reds and pinks, Nyumi's creamy pastels interspersed with jewel-like forms speak of an individual aesthetic and sensual engagement with place. Pawalla depicts the abundance of Nyumi's country, the painting dense with luminous symbols representing bush foods such as Kantjilyi (bush raisin), pura (bush tomato), and minyili (seed). Women are shown as U shapes, with their wana (digging sticks) and coolamons. The many dominating white layers are referred to as kinti-kinti (close-close) which creates a rich texture that references the seeds of spinifex which grow abundantly after the rains. These seeds are white in colour and grow so thickly they obscure the ground and other plants. Selected works by Nyumi were included in On Reason and Emotion, the 2004 Biennale of Sydney. Within the catalogue which accompanied the Biennale, Hetti Perkins described Nyumi's paintings as expressing 'more than a nostalgic yearning for the past.
