  • Kenneth R. Nunamaker (American, 1890-1957) - Spring
    Jun. 02, 2024

    Kenneth R. Nunamaker (American, 1890-1957) - Spring

    Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Kenneth R. Nunamaker (American, 1890-1957) - Spring Signed ‘K NUNAMAKER–’ bottom right, oil on canvas 36 x 36 in. (91.4 x 91.4cm) Provenance Private Estate, Pennsylvania. Lot Essay Kenneth Nunamaker joined the New Hope School in 1918, well after its foundation. Foregoing his earlier career in advertising in the Midwest, Nunamaker moved east because he heard murmurings of the natural beauty of the Delaware River. As exemplified in the present work, Nunamaker's work was strongly influenced by Edward Redfield. In fact, the two artists lived and painted near each other in Centre Bridge, the famous British-sounding village depicted here. Although Redfield had very few students, he took Nunamaker under his wing, and taught him how to best capture the ever-changing effects of light, and suggest, through a vigorous and heavy impasto, the rugged beauty of the Pennsylvania countryside. The present work showcases how indebted Nunamaker was to his mentor, as we are presented with an impressively large winter landscape, composed of a thickly layered impasto and a rich color palette which slightly contrasts Redfield's moodier, and grayer compositions. Through a careful play of light and shadow, and crips yellows, blues and greens, Nunamaker depicts a transient, fleeting moment that, despite the season and just for a small moment, warms our eyes.

  • Kenneth Nunamaker (American, 1890-1957) - By the Pond, Early Autumn
    Jun. 02, 2024

Kenneth Nunamaker (American, 1890-1957) - By the Pond, Early Autumn

    Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Kenneth Nunamaker (American, 1890-1957) - By the Pond, Early Autumn Signed ‘K. NUNAMAKER’ bottom right, oil on canvas 16 x 18 in. (40.6 x 45.7cm) Provenance Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Lot Essay Part of a second generation of New Hope artists, Kenneth Nunamaker relocated from Glenside, Pennsylvania to Centre Bridge in 1923. Enchanted by the idyllic beauty of Bucks County, Nunamaker dedicated the next three and a half decades to depicting the region's landscapes, picturesque villages, and vernacular architecture, as in By the Pond, Early Autumn. Here, a sun-dappled pond gives way to a narrow path, which, in turn, culminates in a stone farmhouse in the composition's middle ground. The trees that frame the house on either side are leafless but not completely barren–a confirmation of the season. Rendered in a carefully blended palette of orange, brown, and yellow–and against a forested hillside that appears to dissolve in a lavender haze–the landscape is animated by rich impasto and a confident treatment of light and atmosphere. A hymn to autumn and to Nunamaker's beloved Bucks County, By the Pond, Early Autumn captures the soul of the region through a tapestry of color and texture.

  • Kenneth R. Nunamaker (1890 - 1957) American
    Jan. 30, 2024

    Kenneth R. Nunamaker (1890 - 1957) American

    Est: $3,500 - $5,500

Kenneth R. Nunamaker (1890 - 1957) Oil on canvas board, signed lower right, measures (16 x 20) w/ frame ( 22 x 27 inches) A prominent member of the New Hope School, Kenneth R. Nunamaker was born in Akron, Ohio in 1890. He traveled west at the age of seventeen, herding cattle for a living. This marked the beginning of Nunamaker's artistic "training". He painted in his spare time, translating the landscape around him into shapes on his canvas. Nunamaker received his official training in the art department of the Akron Engraving Company in Ohio. He moved to the Philadelphia area in 1918 and became the art director of Hoedt Studios. He moved to Center Bridge, Pennsylvania in 1923 where he developed a close association with members of the New Hope School.

    Dec. 03, 2023

Kenneth R. Nunamaker (American, 1890-1957) - Centre Bridge (In the Snow)

    Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Kenneth R. Nunamaker (American, 1890-1957) - Centre Bridge (In the Snow) Signed ‘K. NUNAMAKER-’ bottom left; also pencil signed, located and titled ‘New Hope, Penna P.D./Center [sic] Bridge’ on upper stretcher verso, oil on canvas 28 x 32 ½ in. (71.1 x 82.6cm) Provenance Private Collection, New Hope, Pennsylvania. Lot Essay Relocating from Glenside, Pennsylvania to Centre Bridge in 1923, Kenneth Nunamaker was part of a second generation of New Hope artists. Enamored of the natural beauty of Bucks County and the Delaware River, he devoted the next three and a half decades to painting the region’s picturesque landscapes and quaint villages, as exemplified be Centre Bridge (In the Snow). Mentored by Edward Redfield upon his arrival in New Hope, Nunamaker emulated the elder Impressionist’s methods. Vigorous impasto, a nuanced understanding of the effects of light, and a central path that recedes into the middleground recall Redfield’s own atmospheric depictions of the Delaware River Valley. Captured amid light snow flurries—and in a palette of mottled white, gray, and steel blue—Nunamaker’s Centre Bridge is a celebration of the winter season.
