  • Frank Nuderscher, Missouri (1880-1959), The Road to the Woods, oil on artist board
    Jun. 10, 2023

Frank Nuderscher, Missouri (1880-1959), The Road to the Woods, oil on artist board

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Frank Nuderscher Missouri, (1880-1959) The Road to the Woods oil on artist board signed lower left, in a beautiful, period carved giltwood frame. Frank Nuderscher was an important St. Louis figure in the art world from the 1920s onward and until the time of his passing in 1959. He served many art roles in the city while working as a painter, muralist and illustrator (including the supervision of St. Louis' fascinating WPA projects of the 1930s). He loved working on street scenes, architectural monuments and with Missouri landscapes; and he probably created what would become known as his finest work when observing the natural panoramas and floral beauty of the ancient Ozark Mountain area located in the southern half of the State toward Arkansas (the word "Ozark" itself comes from the French phrase: "Aux Arcs", or "toward Arkansas.") He loved employing pastel colors to capture delicate impressionistic meteorological elements such as haze, fog, mist and sunlight. The natural beauty that Nuderscher loved stood in sharp contrast with many common elements from the eras in which many of his tranquil and beautiful landscapes were created, notably the Great Depression and the World Wars. Here we see an idealised, shady, lovely pastel-based country dirt road leading on towards the deep Missouri woods in full summer bloom, packed with local examples of native plants and trees. An old-time rustic makeshift portable wooden fence runs along the far side of the road, indicating that were are not yet fully in the wilds of the Missouri woods. Nuderscher used brushstrokes thick with many shades of greens, lavenders, beiges and pinks in order to achieve texture, depth and beauty. It is a lovely companion piece to Nuderscher's "Summer," also available in this auction.

  • Frank Nuderscher, Missouri (1880-1959), Summer, oil on canvas
    Jun. 10, 2023

Frank Nuderscher, Missouri (1880-1959), Summer, oil on canvas

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Frank Nuderscher Missouri, (1880-1959) Summer oil on canvas signed lower left, in a beautiful, period giltwood frame. Here we have a beautiful painting of a scene that is typical of the Missouri countryside. The path down the centre of the scene runs through a meadow where tall native grasses, flowers and a pair of small trees flourish. Taller, older and shadier trees and a river bed draw our eye out toward the horizon line where rich soils and verdant hills remind us of how naturally beautiful and rich our state is. This is an impressionistic and somewhat idealised painting that was probably made in the month of June—right when Missouri flora finds itself at its peak, after the heavy spring rains have passed, and when the Ozark area is in its fullest and greenest season of the year. It is a lovely companion piece to Nuderscher's "Road to the Woods, " also available in this auction.

FRANK NUDERSCHER (AMERICAN, 1880-1959) Autumn Comes to the Country Lane Oil on board, signed lower left. Autumnal country scene with farm house along a road. About the Artist: Nuderscher was born in St. Louis, the son of a successful building contractor. His father wanted him to join the family business, but Nuderscher always had an interest in art. Legend has it that Nuderscher finally convinced his father to support his aspirations when at age 12 he earned two dollars sketching a bas-relief for a stonemason, therefore convincing his father that he could earn a living as an artist. Nuderscher is frequently credited for being self-taught as an artist. However, it was reported that he took art classes in New York, Philadelphia, and Provincetown, that he studied art while traveling in Europe, and that he was enrolled at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1904, Nuderscher first attracted the attention of the fine arts community with his painting of the Eads Bridge which won first prize in the Artist's Guild Competition. With artists from all over the world in St. Louis for the 1904 World's Fair, it was a particularly competitive field. W.K. Bixby, a nationally recognized art patron and philanthropist, purchased the work for his own collection and encouraged the young artist. The Eads Bridge would become a repeated theme for Nuderscher and his future Granite Building studio at Fourth and Market Streets in downtown St. Louis would look out over the iconic structure. 20" height, 24" width; Frame: 25" height, 29.5" width
