    • FRANK B. NUDERSCHER (AMERICAN, 1880-1969)
      Jan. 13, 2024

      FRANK B. NUDERSCHER (AMERICAN, 1880-1969)

      Est: $2,500 - $5,000

Frank B. Nuderscher American (St. Louis), 1880-1959 Landscape Oil on canvas, signed lower right Summertime landscape along a stream with distant mountains, framed. About the Artist: Nuderscher was born in St. Louis, the son of a successful building contractor. His father wanted him to join the family business, but Nuderscher always had an interest in art. Legend has it that Nuderscher finally convinced his father to support his aspirations when at age 12 he earned two dollars sketching a bas-relief for a stonemason, therefore convincing his father that he could earn a living as an artist. Nuderscher is frequently credited for being self-taught as an artist. However, it was reported that he took art classes in New York, Philadelphia, and Provincetown, that he studied art while traveling in Europe, and that he was enrolled at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1904, Nuderscher first attracted the attention of the fine arts community with his painting of the Eads Bridge which won first prize in the Artist's Guild Competition. With artists from all over the world in St. Louis for the 1904 World's Fair, it was a particularly competitive field. W.K. Bixby, a nationally recognized art patron and philanthropist, purchased the work for his own collection and encouraged the young artist. The Eads Bridge would become a repeated theme for Nuderscher and his future Granite Building studio at Fourth and Market Streets in downtown St. Louis would look out over the iconic structure.

      Est: $400 - $450

Frank Bernard Nuderscher (Missouri, 1880-1959), "Stream Encampment," oil on canvasboard landscape depicting a cabin, grove of trees and fence at the edge of a wide stream, with hills visible in background. Signed "F. Nuderscher" lower left. Exhibition label en verso for the St. Louis Artists Guild with artist's name, title, original price of $40 and note: "Eligible for $25 purchase prize". Ripple molded giltwood frame appears original. Board: 14" H x 16 1/2" W. Framed: 18" H x 20" W. Provenance: Estate of Carl Klein, Brentwood, TN. Biography: "Nuderscher was a self-trained artist who became known for his industrial scenes of his hometown -St. Louis - and for Ozark landscape paintings. He was also an active member of the regional art scene; he was the last survivor of the Riverfront Art Colony, in 1936 he supervised the city's WPA (Works Progress Administration) projects, he was a member of the National Association of Mural Painters and of the Saint Louis Artist Guild where he won ten first prizes, he served as president of the Independent Artists of St. Louis, and he was one of the founding members of the Society of Ozark Painters. Nuderscher and the other Ozark painters were attracted to the region for the delicate colors produced by the hazy atmosphere. In the earlier years of the Society, the region was seen as a sanctuary of beauty from the horrors and ugliness of World War I, and works by Society artists, like Nuderscher, frequently retained an emphasis on a quiet, restful composition featuring soft, pleasant colors."
