    Mar. 14, 2021

    Arnould / Affiches. ca. 1896.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: GASTON NOURY (1866-?) SIZE: 24 1/4 x 31 1/2 in./61.5 x 80 cm PRINTER: Imp. Bourgerie, Paris DESCRIPTION: Collecting posters isn’t a contemporary concept. Almost as soon as the works began to be printed in large, colorful formats in the 1880s, they were appreciated by connoisseurs. But it was the print collectors who started the poster craze of the period, and it was the print dealers, such as Arnould, who catered to them by stocking posters and issuing catalogues of them. In 1896, Arnould issued his famous Catalogue d’Affiches artistiques with a cover by Toulouse-Lautrec; it included three posters by Noury, which were available for one to five francs each. In this poster, two matrons put their heads together to make a buying decision, sporting the large puffed sleeves, long gloves, and confectionary chapeaux that were fashionable at the time. Noury was born in and grew up in Elbeuf where his grandfather was the founder and director of the local museum. Although his primary interests were painting and drawing nature subjects, he created several evocative posters of the era. (Art Nouveau; Posters on Posters)

Maitres de Affiche - Pour les pauvres by Gaston Noury - 39

    Est: $150 - $450

This first edition, folio lithograph after a poster is from Les Maitres de l'Affiche. The work was published by Imprimerie Chaix under the direction of Jules Cheret in Paris between 1896 and 1900. The prints were published as a monthly subscription, with 4 sent each month to subscribers. On 16 occasions "bonus" plates of original designs by noted artists were also included. Each lithograph features the blind embossed stamp of Maitres de l'Affiche designed by Cheret. Celebrated artists of the time contributed to the work including Steinlen, Mucha, Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Forain, Grasset, Meunier, Louis Rhead, Dudley Hardy, Beggarstaff, Edward Penfield et al. Jules Cheret was considered the father of poster art. "He dominated the series, with one in every four Maitres by him, the first in each monthly instalment, and 7 of the Special plates, a total of 67. With over 1000 poster designs to his credit, his large representation in the series is justified, although some critics have pointed out that, as the artistic director, he may have been biased towards selecting his own work." (Appelbaum p.iii) Cheret demonstrated a unique combination of artistic, technical, and entrepreneurial talent that spearheaded the poster industry. He opened his own print shop in 1866 in Paris and from 1881 on his shop operated as part of the Chaix firm which gave us Les Maitres de l'Affiche. Among the most sought after plates in the work are the "Job" and "Moulin Rouge" by Toulouse Lautrec. Rennert noted of the "Job" by Mucha that "more than any other work of Mucha's, this beauty established him as the master of convoluted hair and the creator of unforgettable popular images; the poster was used for years in many variants all over the world, sometimes with marginal text in various languages. A classic by any standard." (Rennert, PAI-XLIX 389) "Jane Abdy called it "a secular icon," and indeed it is a magnificent production, considering that it advertises cigarette paper. "The background, in a dull imperial purple is a perfect foil for the golden curls of the smoking girl, whose locks are spread over the poster like the delicate filigree work of an Indian bracelet"(Abdy, p.136) This art subscription was created during the Belle Epoque period in France. "There was nothing exclusive about the 'joie de vivre' that swept Paris, at a delirious pace, out of the 19th century into the 20th. As Victor Hugo had observed, the city lived by, and for, the whole human race. Haussman's great boulevards had opened up a spacious stage where Paris made a spectacle of herself by day and night. Outdoors and indoors the walls of buildings flowered with posters that took their themes from the passing show of 'La Vie Parisenne.' Advertising never knew happier days. The most ephemeral of the arts has left us with a vision of the 'good old days' that vanished forever in the gunsmoke of 1914. Those gay nineties and naughty noughts that will always be remembered as 'La Belle Epoque.'(The beautiful era)" (Horizon p. 97) "By the 1890s the streets of every great metropolis were enlivened by large colourful posters (see The Great Poster Movement). The poster had not only caught the fancy of the broad public, but its best examples were already being regarded as works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reprinted in a manageable form. In the last five years of the century, the Imprimerie Chaix was to play great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient period of 'La Belle Epoque.' It was in those years that the firm published Les Maitres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) reduced lithographic versions, in authentic colours, of the best posters of Europe and America, by more than 90 great artists, posters that bring the period to life." (Appelbaum p.iii)

    For the Poor (Plate 39)

    Est: $1,300 - $1,400

This original stone lithograph is a part of the Les Maîtres de l'Affiche prints now a sought after item. Of the 97 artists represented in the 256 stone lithographs of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, some were preeminent painters and printmakers at various stages of their career. Others were famous illustrators and cartoonists of the period, still well known to art collectors and bibliophiles. Preserving a wide-ranging selection of outstanding posters from the turn of the 19th century, Les Maîtres de l'Affiche's prints, which are now over 110 years old, are considered one of the most prestigious and influential art publications in history.

Artist: GASTON NOURY (1866-?) Size: 36 x 55 1/8 in./91.5 x 140 cm Imp. Herold & Cie, Paris Every year, the Paris social calendar was filled with various charity balls. Some, like the Bal des Petits Lits Blanc happened annually, while others were held as the need arose. This poster advertises an event that fits into the latter category, benefitting the poor of both France and Russia. We see a small horse-drawn sled briskly carrying a representative lady from each country, waving the colors and bonding in solidarity for the cause.

    Loie Fuller/Vol Oriental.

    Est: $2,000 - $2,500

Loie Fuller/Vol Oriental. GASTON NOURY (1866-?) Gouache and crayon drawing with metallic gold highlights. Framed. Loie Fuller's meteoric rise to fame is one of the oddest success stories of the 1890s. Coming from a small Midwestern town in the United States . . . she studied singing, dancing and acting . . . In one play, she noticed how the spotlights, with various color filters, created a rainbow effect on the material of her dress. Fascinated, she experimented with the effect, eventually working up a specialty dance wearing diaphanous materials on which the colored lights played with dazzling results (Gold, p. 116). In a recent and quite revealing biography of the dancer, we read that "the French had always taken Loie more seriously than the Americans had . . . She had maintained her fame by constantly adding something new to her work" (Fuller/Goddess of Light, p. 111). Though perhaps best-remembered for her Fire Dance and Lily Dance, the metallic gold cranes and theatrical masks present on this otherwise sheer costume clearly show that the shrewd Ms. Fuller was not only willing to titillate an audience-she was more than willing to exploit the wave of Orientalism that was rippling across France at the turn-of-the-twentieth-century. Noury was born and grew up in Elbeuf where his grandfather was founder and director of the local museum. Although his primary interests were painting and drawing nature subjects, he created several evocative posters of the era. Maindron (1896) indicates that the "young Noury" is one of the best illustrators of the period. ca. 1898. 5 7/8 x 9 in./14.8 x 22.8 cm

53 1/2x35 1/2 inches. Herold, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears in margins; restoration and restored losses along vertical and horizontal folds. Born in Le Havre, Normandy, Noury was an illustrator who settled in Paris around 1889. With only a few posters to his name it seems he was closely connected to the affichomanie of the period. He designed posters for two of the active poster dealers, Arnould and le pere Didier, and for the 3rd exposition of the Salon des Cent at La Plume. Here, for a charity event at the Tuileries to raise money for the poor in both France and Russia, Noury shows a French woman and Russian woman in a sleigh. With the pending signing of the Franco-Russian alliance, this kind of event would have been extremely au courant. Maitres pl. 39, Gold p. 124.
