Entro cornice in legno intagliato e dorato, cm 41x34 Colin Nouailher, Limoges, second half 16th century, Crucifixion with the Virgin and Saint John Provenienza Roma, Collezione Sangiorgi; Firenze, Pandolfini (17 maggio 1993, lotto 261); Firenze, Collezione privata Bibliografia di confronto S. Baratte, Les émaux peint de Limoges, Paris 2000, pp. 62-73 La tecnica dello smalto dipinto apparve durante la metà del XV secolo, forse prima nei Paesi Bassi, seguita presto da Limoges durante il regno di Luigi XI di Francia (1461-1483), dove fiorì in vari laboratori nel corso del XVI secolo, godendo dei privilegi del re che le garantì quasi un monopolio in Francia, e proprio al re spettava il diritto di concedere il titolo di maestro nella corporazione degli smaltatori, limitato ad alcune famiglie. Gli smalti venivano prodotti in laboratori che spesso persistevano nella stessa famiglia per diverse generazioni ed erano spesso firmati sull’oggetto, o identificabili, almeno per quanto riguarda la famiglia o il laboratorio, tramite segni di punzonatura sul retro dei pannelli, nonché dallo stile. Le botteghe di Limoges raggiunsero l'apice nel XVI secolo con una grande produzione di placche, piatti e stoviglie di smalto dipinte su rame, e tra esse le più note intorno alla metà del XVI secolo furono proprio quelle di Colin Nouailher, Pierre Reymond e Jean Pénicaud.
