Bror Julius Olsson Nordfeldt (1878-1955) Rio en Medio 1936 This rare stone lithograph was printed under the auspices of the Depression-era New Deal program to employ artists and create art for public buildings and parks. The work is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and stamped 'Public Works of Art Project, Thirteenth Regional Committee, Santa Fe, New Mexico.' verso. The sheet is unframed. This rare image, like many others in this auction form the same collection has never been offered at auction, according to the major databases that track sales of art at auction. The composition depicts a church and adjacent structures beyond a steep hillside where a figure walks behind a horse drawn plow. The style reflects that of the Modernist movement that developed around Santa Fe beginning in the 1920s with the famous Los Cincos pintores (The Five Painters) group. The New Mexico Museum of Art, which has this image in their collection, was awarded a grant by the WPA to mat and conserve Nordfeldt's prints from this period, reflecting the importance of this documentary of that region during the difficult period of the middle 1930s. Bror Julius Olsson Nordfeldt, like the Five Painters, documented the people of the region and their struggles in his art. This is a nicely saturated example and in excellent condition. No record of this print ever having been offered at auction could be found. Image measures 9.75 x 13, sheet is 14 x 16.75 inches. Nordfeldt went to Paris for the unveiling and remained in Europe for three years, spending most of his time in France where he studied at the Academie Julian with Jean Paul Laurens. Nordfeldt was much influenced by the painting styles of Manet, Gauguin and Cezanne and was especially taken with the strong, bold coloration of the newly introduced Fauves style. He also went to England and learned etching and woodblock cutting in London from Frank M. Fletcher. He exhibited work at the Royal Academy of London. Returning to Chicago in 1903, Bror Nordfeldt worked as a portrait artist, a set designer for the Little Theatre, and teacher, whose students included Raymond Jonson, modernist painter whom he later joined in New Mexico. Although he moved East in 1907, Bror Nordfeldt had two successful, attention-getting solo exhibitions in Chicago in 1911 and 1912. The first show had paintings of Chicago subjects and was held at Albert Roullier's Gallery, and the second at Thurber's Gallery featured abstract, impressionist city genre scenes and portraits. Many persons found his French-influenced modernism stylistically shocking, but others such as reviewer Harriet Monroe had a positive reaction. In the "Chicago Tribune", May 12, 1912, she wrote that the paintings were "the most ambitious and successful pictorial interpretation of Chicago which has been achieved as yet." During World War I, Nordfeldt was in California where he worked as a camouflage painter for the Navy and was also in Europe on military duty. Previous to that, he had an exhibition entry in the San Francisco Panama-Pacific Exposition of 1915, winning a silver medal for an etching. Throughout his career, especially when he was living in New Mexico, Nordfeldt made many trips to California. In 1937, he exhibited work with the San Francisco Art Association. From 1917 to 1940, he lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico and initially painted sympathetic Indian figures and used Indian motifs as design elements in his canvases. He was one of the founding members of the Indian Artists Fund, an organization dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Pueblo tribes. Encouraged by his artist friend, Russell Cowles, Nordfeldt added landscapes to his subject matter beginning 1929, but destroyed many of these paintings before leaving New Mexico. Bror Julius Nordfeldt lived his last years in Lambertsville, New Jersey, and in 1955, died of a heart attack in Henderson, Texas.

Note Following a twenty-year residency in Santa Fe, and teaching positions in both Wichita and Minneapolis, Nordfeldt relocated permanently to Lambertville, New Jersey in 1937. The present lot, one of a number of works the artist executed on the theme of outdoor recreation, transports viewers to the frigid banks of the Delaware River. Typical of Nordfeldt’s paintings from the late 1930s and 1940s, the painting is organized into a series of distinct registers: the western bank (or Pennsylvania side) of the Delaware, the river itself, the city of Lambertville, and, farthest from the picture plane, the rolling hills of New Jersey’s Hunterdon County. Anonymous sportsmen engage in a variety of activities, from skating to ice hockey, before the colorful façades of Lambertville’s waterfront. In the foreground—the “sidelines” of the composition—bystanders, hockey sticks in hand, warm themselves beside a fire. Echoing the athletes’ brisk movements, Nordfeldt applies paint in a manner that verges on slapdash—his technique is animated but assured, with an energy befitting the day’s festivities. In overall fair condition. The work would likely benefit from a light cleaning. Examination under UV light reveals broad, scattered and extensive restoration throughout. Interestingly, none of the figures are inpainted, but the snow is heavily touched up. With broad inpainting also visible in the sky and along the canal, while most of the buildings are intact.
