Thierry Noir Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1958 -

Thierry Noir is a French artist who is claimed to be the first street artist to paint the Berlin Wall. His brightly colored paintings, which often feature cartoon-like profiles, are now considered iconic and can still be seen on the East Side Gallery. He currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

Noir was born in 1958 in Lyon, France. He moved to Berlin in January 1982 with two small suitcases, attracted by the music of David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who lived in West Berlin at this time. He lived in a squat at Mariannenplatz, near the Berlin Wall.

In the 1980s, street art was considered vandalism, and German street artists avoided drawing on the wall - it was a kind of taboo for them, Berliners called it a “wall of shame”.

In April 1984, Noir and Christophe-Emmanuel Bouchet started to paint the Berlin Wall, eventually painting 1 kilometre of it. Initially, the attitude of West Berliners to Noir's work was wary, often even hostile. Some believed that he was working for budget money and were against such spending of money from his taxes. Others believed that Tieri's task was to make a more “presentable” wall, which they could not agree with. He stated of painting the wall at this time: "I decided spontaneously to start to make something on the wall. I got thousands of questions - everyone wanted to know something about this - because it was new - there were no big paintings on the wall." Between 1984 and the fall of the Berlin Wall many other artists painted the wall, including Keith Haring, Kiddy Cidny, and Indiano. Noir can be briefly seen painting part of the Berlin Wall in Wim Wenders's 1987 film Wings of Desire.

In 1992 the Berlin Wall was declared a historic monument. In 2009, Noir was part of an initiative by the local government to restore 1300 meters of the wall to address issues caused over the years by vandalism, weather, and theft. As a part of this initiative Noir repainted several of his original works.

THIERRY NOIR ( Lyon, France, 1958). Untitled, 2016. Acrylic on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Signed, dated and dedicated on the back. Measurements: 30,5 x 25,5 cm. The apparent simplicity of Noir's emblematic characters is evident in the present work. Starring one of his iconic busts in profile, the artist resorts to a face of forceful and synthetic strokes that acquire greater depth through the use of a palette of expressive tonality, where the warmth and coldness of the predominant tones are no longer opposing qualities. This work, heir to his early paintings on the Berlin Wall, still retains the style of painting rapidly in the open air in a dangerous environment. Noir reacted to his surroundings and his monsters are a metaphor for the Berlin Wall, each related to his experiences or feelings of what he calls a "killing machine". Thierry Noir is a French artist and muralist based in Berlin. He is considered the first artist to paint the Berlin Wall in the 1980s. He is known for his brightly colored paintings on large sections of the Berlin Wall and some of these original paintings can still be seen on surviving segments of the Wall in art collections and in the East Side Gallery. Noir's work and style are now considered iconic, and Noir is also considered one of the forerunners of the street art movement as a whole. He continues to create murals around the world in cities such as London, Los Angeles and Sydney. About the voice in the film Wings of Desire, in the artist's portrayal of a beggar figurine. His debut, according to the artist, is the tour of four soldiers with machine guns. Even the inhabitants of Kreuzberg oppose the recovery of the wild painting, which forced Noir to recommend it. These wall paintings become more and more extensive over the years and find increasing resonance in the art scene. In 1991, he was a guest artist at the East Side Gallery. Although the East Side Gallery is a protected monument, the restorer has worked (1993, 1996 and 1998). In 2005, the artist Noir created a "Buddy Bear" named Teddy Noir for the benefit of the Berlin Children's Aid Organization. Since 2004, he has formed projects with the German painter Christina Allzeit.

Tic. Thierry Noir was born in Lyon in 1958 and grew up in France before moving to Germany in the early 1980s. He moved to Berlin in January 1982, at the height of the Cold War. Equipped with two small suitcases, he settled in a squat at Mariannenplatz with one of his friends, Christophe?Emmanuel Bouchet. At that time, the Berlin Wall was still standing, splitting the city in two and the Soviet militias were raiding the GDR side whenever possible. A militant artist at heart, Thierry Noir quickly became interested in the symbol of the Berlin Wall and sought to make his contribution to the building, but in his own way. He wants to destroy this symbol, demystify it and ridicule it. It was with a desire for rebellion and a certain melancholy towards the society of the time that he painted some graffiti on the 3-metre high wall in 1982: yellow, red and green shapes that were as simple as they were fast. One of his first works was an ode to Jean de la Fontaine’s fable, The Hare and the Tortoise – a work he did with his colleague Christophe?Emmanuel Bouchet. Indeed, it was formally forbidden to approach the wall and even more so to draw anything on it. The conditions under which he had to paint enabled him to develop a fast and efficient painting technique - a technique that he himself develops in his essay Fast Form Manifest. This technique is unique to him and consists of painting a form in one stroke, resulting in linear and circular works that are relatively simple. His debut in the capital proved complicated due to the repression of the security services and the distrust of the inhabitants who suspected him of being an agent of the American or French secret services. Nevertheless, as soon as the Wall came down in 1989, Thierry Noir gained a certain notoriety and was even credited with the beginnings of street art. In the space of 5 years, he covered more than 6 km of the Berlin Wall. Since then, he has been considered one of the major figures of street art, in the same way as Miss.Tic.
