    Feb. 03, 2018

NOBUKAZU: TWO NIO ON STRAW SANDAL

    Est: €500 - €1,000

Netsuke, wood. Japan, 19th cent. Unusual work with perfect carving work, masterfully executed in every detail! Literally, nio means the “two kings”. They are gigantic, muscular wardens of temple gates. In this netsuke, they sit on a large waraji and compete in the sport of udeoshi or arm wrestling. Despite the tiny size of the piece, their faces are expressive and typical for the nio, who put the fear of the gods into the demons. The eyes are inlaid. On the bottom is the sandal’s lacing and, on a curved bridge which serves to hold the lace, the signature NOBU-KAZU to 信 一 刀. WIDTH 4,3 CM From an old German collection Condition reports and further images are available upon request - Expertise: Wolfmar Zacken
