      Feb. 06, 2021

NICHOLAS NIXON K.W. Boston (Eye) 1985

      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

NICHOLAS NIXON, K. W., Boston, 1985, 7.625x9.625" gelatin silver print, Printed c. 1990, From the series Boston. Titled, dated 1985, numbererd 13/50 and signed in pencil on print verso; inscribed in pencil: TR 403.12-88 / ACC.88.369 Nixon is known for printmaking as well as imagemaking. While [Nixon] challenges the limitations of time in his sequence on the Brown sisters, his 1985 series on a group of senior citizens in a Boston nursing home pushes against the boundaries of space. In this case, the reservations of aging studies scholars appear to make perfect sense. Here, the camera moves as close to the sitters as at all possible, so close that it sometimes crops their faces. The captions, similarly abbreviated (though first and foremost to guarantee anonymity), identify the sitters by their initials and their location only. Separated from any notion of personal identity, the viewer stares at the signs of extreme old age. In "A. K., Boston," we only see a nose, a mouth, and an eye. "K. W., Boston" shows an eye and an eyebrow, some skin around it. "A. B., Boston" displays a hand on a table, a hand whose skin seems loose, the fingers long and deathlike, the table clearly an institutional piece of furniture designed to keep subjects in their place. In other photographs providing more visual context, the protagonists are in their beds, staring into space, partly protecting themselves from view, but ultimately exposed by a camera they do not - or cannot - confront. Credit: Ribbat, Christoph. ""Out of It"? Old Age and Photographic Portraiture." Amerikastudien / American Studies 56, no. 1 (2011): 67-84. Nicholas Nixon (b. 1947) is known for the ease and intimacy of his black and white large format photographs. Nixon has photographed porch life in the rural south, schools in and around Boston, cityscapes, sick and dying people, the intimacy of couples, and most famously for his long term project of annual portraits of his wife, Bebe, and her three sisters (which he began in 1975). Recording his subjects close and with meticulous detail, he facilitates an emotional connection between the viewer and the subject. In 2014, Nixon's annual portrait series, "The Brown Sisters," reached its 40th anniversary. The complete series was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and re-published in an anniversary catalogue. In Summer 2013 Nixon’s book Close Far was released by Steidl. The body of work explores the self in physical and psychological proximity to the urban landscape. In 2017, Fundacion MAPFRE in Madrid opened a comprehensive survey of the artist's work to date, accompanied by a catalogue illustrating over 200 images, and the ICA Boston mounted a chronological retrospective exhibition. Nixon has been awarded three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and two Guggenheim Fellowships. His work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among many others. In 1975, Nick Nixon photographed his wife and her three sisters, inaugurating an annual tradition that continues to this day. One picture is released each year, regardless of how many negatives are exposed, and the four sisters appear in the same order and look directly at the camera. The project is celebrating its 40th year, and while as a group the images capture the complexities of family relations, aging, and identity, this image, the first in the series, shows the sisters at the very beginning of this process.
