Two Rustics, pen, ink and watercolour wash on paper, depicting two gentlemen one dishevelled, the other with his hand tucked in his jacket, edges of paper reinforced to verso, sheet size 9.2 x 12.6 cm (3 5/8 x 4 3/4 ins), together with Fripp (Charles Edwin, 1854-1906). Thoughtful Man, pencil on paper, depicting a man standing resting his hands on a broom, monogrammed C.F.F to lower right, sheet size 20.3 x 16.4 cm (8 x 6 1/2 ins), mounted (25.3 x 21 cm), plus English School. Two illustrations to sonnets by Keats and Longfellow, circa 1830-40, brown ink on paper, one depicting a man lying on the grass reading a book, and a woman holding a posy of flowers, a man kneeling at her feet gesturing to the floor, with pencil verse 'Fatigued he sinks into a pleasant lair of wavy grass and reads a debonair and gentle tale of love and languishment', sheet size 17.6 x 11 cm (7 x 4 3/8 ins), the other showing a cupid sitting on a tree and a young child looking at a butterfly while an older figure lies on the ground reading, verse in pencil 'Now shouting to the apples on the tree with cheeks as round and red as they and now among the yellow stalks Longfellow', and three other similar 19th century English pencil drawings, all contained in a blue cloth drop-over box QTY: (7)

John Nixon was an accomplished amateur caricaturist of Georgian life and friend of Thomas Rowlandson, who exhibited 39 works at the Royal Academy between 1781 and 1815. Astley's Ampitheatre is generally considered to be the first British circus. Opened by Philip Astley as a riding school in 1768, displays of horsemanship to the paying public were soon augmented by acrobatic displays, clown antics, theatrical and musical acts, and dramatic battle re-enactments.

EXHIBITED John Nixon (c.1750-1818), Cyril Fry Gallery, 44 High Street, Aldeburgh, Suffolk, 1999 The present sketchbook containing watercolours and drawings by John Nixon date from 1795-1815. They depict aspects of life in England at the time. Nixon was born in Belfast in the 1750's and came to Basinghall Street in London as a successful and wealthy merchant. He was also a gifted artist who exhibited thirty nine pictures at the Royal Academy from 1781-1815. He was a close friend of Thomas Rowlandson whose style his work closely resembles but without recourse to caricature. His appointment as the Hon. Secretary and Providore of teh Beefsteak Club, in London, brought him into the social scene. John was a bachelor, as was his brother Richard, both of whom entertained with lively routs held in their warehouse in London. John was an enthusiastic amateur actor and took part in many performances in the private theatre at Brandenburg House, Hammersmith; the home of the Margave and Margravina (formerly Lady Craven) of Anspach, where he was considered a star turn according to Henry Angelo the fencing master.
