RICHARD M. NIXON (1913 - 1994) Thirty-seventh President of the United States who led during the Vietnam War, re-opened diplomatic ties with China and the U.S.S.R., resigned his office due to the Watergate scandal. Good content T.L.S. "RN" as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., San Clemente, June 18, 1973. Just as the Watergate scandal begins to engulf him, Nixon writes a doctor friend in New York: "...I am deeply grateful for the words of encouragement...None, however, are more welcome than those that come from old and dear friends like you...Your assurance of continuing trust and confidence renews my faith that this Administration can achieve the great goals of peace and progress all Americans seek...". A scant two weeks after he signed this letter, Alexander Butterfield, former presidential appointments secretary, would reveal that since 1971 Nixon had recorded all conversations and telephone calls in his offices. The revelation would doom Nixon's defense and lead to his resignation.
