Between September 15 and 20, 1985, Berlin hosted the XI World Congress of the International Federation for Gynecology and Obstetrics. This was indeed an honor, for 1985, marked the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics' one hundredth anniversary and the Congress opened on the precise day of the centenary. The international organization owes its existence to Professor Hubert de Watteville who organized the forty-two national organizations into an international society in Geneva, Switzerland in 1954. Today, there are more than twice as many member nations as when the international organization was founded. The International Federation for Gynecology and Obstetrics promotes the worldwide exchange of scientific, technological and medical ideas relating to gynecology. It serves the health of mothers and children even in countries which cannot achieve acceptable health standards on their own. The international organization holds World Congresses every three years. The image of a hat or a boot displayed on a curving wrought iron sign post adds a touch of whimsy to an otherwise busy stret. While colorful blooms overflow from flower pots which grace the doorways. During the Middle Ages, the medieval mind delighted in ornate and colorful art. And nowhere is this love more evident than in medieval manuscripts, for they are alive with intricate and colorful drawings created in the margins and at the beginnings of chapters by patient monks working by hand. Known as illuminations, these miniature works of art virtually illuminate the pages of the ancient manuscripts with their bright colors and intricate designs. But beyond their beauty, the illuminations also mark an important milestone in history, for their disappearance -- with the invention of printing -- signified the end of an antiquated age and became a strong signal of the coming of modern culture. Illumination reached its highest form in the 14th and 15th centuries, when pages were decorated with gold, silver and all the colors of the rainbow. Indeed, the gray parchment was lighted with floriated letters, margins filled with leaves and branches and scenes from the painter's own life. Through their works, the illuminators imbued the written page with a beauty and attractiveness beyond the powers of a mere scribe alone. Since many of the illuminated manuscripts were religious in nature, the figures illuminated often had religious significance. One example is the strawberry, featured in thos artwork, for it symbolized the blood of Christ spilt for the redemption of the world. Celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary in 1985, the Royal Canadian Navy was established by an act of the British Parliament on May 4, 1910. Originally equipped with only two training cruisers -- the HMCS Niobe for the East Coast, and the HMCS Rainbow for the West Coast -- the Royal Canadian Navy grew rapidly with the outbreak of World War I. The relatively small fleet -- seven thousand men by 1917 -- aided the Allied war effort by conducting antisubmarine patrols across the Atlantic. The fleet increased beginning in 1923 with the formation of the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve and the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. By World War II, there were over nine hundred ships in the RCN, 375 of which were armed for offensive action, manned by a total of approximately 95,000 volunteers. Again, the Canadian Navy was charged with opening the sea lanes in the Atlantic; their fighting spirit provided safe passage for troop and cargo ship convoys against the dreaded German U-boats. The link between Great Britain and the Canadian Northwest Atlantic Command proved particularly vital in late 1942, when Canadian warships escorted the Anglo-American invasion force to North Africa. After the war, the reserve forces were reorganized while the RCN continued to provide aid during the Korean Conflict, and bolster its NATO commitments. Anyway you say it -- Feliz Cumpleanos (Spanish), Frohlicher Geburtstag (German) or Tanjobi Omedeto (Japanese) -- it means "Happy Birthday to you!" Around the world people celebrate their birthdays. Many countries have their own distinctive customs for honoring this very special day. Celebrations of children's birthdays kinderfeste, began in Germany about 200 years ago with the placing of candles on birthday cakes to reflect the child's age. There the belief was founded that blowing out all the candles with one breath would make a wish come true. Around the same time, the practice of giving spankings to the birthday celebrant for good luck was started. One spanking for each year of the child's life was delivered, along with one to grow on, one to live on, one to eat on, one to be happy on, and one to get married on. In 1893, two American sisters, Mildred and Patty Hill, wrote the song Happy Birthday to You which became a huge hit all over the world. Today it lends a festive air to birthday celebrations in many different countries. Sometimes people are unable to attend birthday celebrations but want to make their good wishes known. The Renaissance of classical architecture began in Florence, Italy about 1420 and since that date the achievements of Italy's architects have been world renowned. The influence of Renaissance architecture spread into every corner of Europe through the magnificent structures, most notably the basilicas with their awe-inspriing domes. Throughout the Baroque and into the nineteenth century, Italy maintained its place as a leader in architectural innovations. Today, modern Italian architects remain among the most respected in Europe for their designs and implementation of ideas into attractive and functional structures. An important modern structure in Italy is the Underground Exhibit Hall for Autombiles in Turin. Built of steel and concrete, this structure was completed in 1959. A forest in its natural state changes little from year to year. But, with the intervention of man, a forest can suffer -- its very existence questioned in an incredibly short amount of time. For this reason, the forest needs to be watched, and maintained, so that it will continue to offer us its many gifts. In highly developed countries, forests are today respected for their contributions to our system of life -- for the important chemical balances they provide. But in many developing nations, where the forests are so plentiful, there is no maintenance. A tiny principality with a rich history, Monaco is tucked along the French Mediterranean coastline. The nation has been at the forefront of modern trends in Europe, especially during the twentieth century. Nowhere is this better seen that in Monaco's architecture. The architectural legacy of the Grimaldi Prences is evident; ultra-modern structures are built on land reclaimed from the Mediterranean and co-exist side by side with traditional structures such as Monaco's cathedral and those found in the Palace Square area. The Universal Postal Union, a specialized agency of the United Nations, was established to improve postal service throughout the world by ensuring international collaboration. At the beginning of the 19th century, postal relations between nations consisted of a bewildering array of bilateral treaties, which were further confused by a diversity of currencies and units of weight. Postal charges were largely calculated by distance traveled. In addition, the recipient of the letter, rather than the sender, was responsible for expenses incurred! In 1837, British educator and reformer Rowland Hill first proposed charging a single uniform rate for mail delivery, based on weight rather than distance, and the use of prepaid postage stamps. On September 15, 1874, representatives of 22 countries met at the first International Postal Congress to sign a "Treaty concerning the Establishment of a General Postal Union." This organization became responsible for the adoption of uniform postal rates and units of weight between all member nations. In 1878, the second International Postal Congress was held and the body's name was changed to Universal Postal Union (UPU). On July 1, 1948, the UPU became a specialized agency of the United Nations. Over the years, the UPU has extended its functions to cover other international services provided by postal administrations, including money orders, parcel post, postal checks, cash on delivery and savings banks. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 34c Fort York stamp issued June 28, 1985. Canada's historic Fort York, located near present day Toronto, was the site of several important battles during the War of 1812. On the morning of April 27, 1813, the soldiers at the garrison and the townspeople of York were startled to see the sails of fifteen American warships in the harbor. The British forces at the fort were outnumbered three to one by the Americans and a furious battle was fought. During one part of the action, the powder magazine at the fort accidentally exploded, killing many men on both sides. Indeed, the large numberof British and American casualties made this one of the bloodiest battles in the War of 1812. Despite stiff resistance, the Americans were able to capture the fort and town, thereby gaining many badly needed supplies. The American forces returned to Fort York several months later and landed unopposed. However, the British soldiers had anticipated the Americans' return and hid many military supplies before the American forces could seize them. After the second American raid, Fort York was rebuilt and fortified to withstand direct attacks. However, no more battles were fought during the War of 1812. During the American Civil War, however, a heavy seven-gun battery was placed along the south wall of the fort to ward against fighting along the U.S./Canada border. During World War II, the nations allied against Germany, Italy and Japan were known as the United Nations. Later, this name was given to a postwar organization dedicated to preserving lasting world peace. In 1945, representatives of the allied nations met in San Francisco to work out a plan for this new international organization to help keep the peace. This plan was described in a document known as the Charter of the United Nations. In June, 1945 Australia and other Oceania countries ... together with nearly fifty other nations ... signed this Charter to become the first UN members. As members, each nation pledges to uphold the purposes of the United Nations -- foremost being the preservation of international peace and security. The United Nations is also dedicated to the development of friendly relations among nations based on equal rights and international cooperation. Since the founding of the United Nations, nearly every country on earth has joined the organization. New members are admitted to the United Nations on recommendation of the Security Council, however each new member must be accepted by a two-thirds vote of the General Assembly. When the United Nations was established in 1945, the UN Charter set up six different divisions to carry out the goals and objectives of the United Nations. Each division -- or organ as they are called -- has specific duties, powers and operating methods. The major organ of the United Nations is the General Assembly. This is the only organ in which all member nations are represented. The General Assembly discusses issues of importance to all UN members and recommends actions to be taken by individual UN members or the other organs of the UN. The Security Council has the primary responsibility of preserving worldwide peace. The Council may investigate a dispute between nations and suggest ways of settling it. To help the other organs of the United Nations perform their duties as efficiently as possible, The Secretariat manages the day-to-day business of the UN. The Charter gives the Economic and Social Council several duties including encouraging universal human rights and higher standards of living for all nations. Legal disputes between nations are handled by the International Court of Justice. The sixth organ of the UN is the Trusteeship Council which is responsible for watching over territories that are not independent. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 22c Stamp Collecting stamp issued January 23, 1986. Today, it is a simple matter to send a letter abroad. However, in the mid 1800s it was somewhat more troublesome. For, in countries like Germany, there were numerous sovereign states and many different routes through rough, mountainous terrain. During this time, the duties of the postmaster were often combined with that of innkeeper. In addition to serving as a host for travelers, this person was responsible for receiving and passing along the mail to the next post, and providing fresh horses for the postboys who carried the mail. When the mail was due to arrive, the citizens of the town would gather around the Post Office to wait for its arrival which was heralded by the distant sound of the postal horn. Today, the postal horn has come to symbolize much of the rich postal history of Germany and other nations. This artwork depicts an antique postal horn from the early 1900s, and an ornate mailbox used by the Imperial German Mail Service. An official post office sign of the German Reichspost is also shown. Abundant forests have made wood one of the most popular building materials in Norway. For centuries, the majority of Norwegian public buildings were constructed of wood rather than stone. Wooden structures have also traditionally dominated private housing construction in Norway -- and still do today. Thus, when Norwegian architects Odd Lovset and Nils Roar Ovsthus designed the Cubus Houses in Bergen, wood was the natural building material of choice. Like much of Norway's modern architecture, the Cubus Houses reflect the blending of modern architectural regimes such as Rationalism, Functionalism and Expressionism with traditional materials and high standards of craftsmanship and detail. It is easy to see the subtle mingling of traditional and modern architectural thought in the structures. To combat these problems, the United Nations took action to provide relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction for the nations ravaged by World War II. The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration is credited with providing much needed aid to the people and nations. To assist nations in dealing with regional and economic problems, the UN established the Economic Commission for Europe. Today, forty years after the establishment of the United Nations, the UN continues to help peoples and nations affected by war. In addition, the United Nations struggles to improve the way of life for all mankind by combating hunger, providing aid to needy children and fighting for universal human rights. Today, it is a simple matter to send a letter abroad. However, in the mid 1800s it was somewhat more troublesome. In countries like Germany, there were numerous sovereign states and many different routes through rough, mountainous terrain. One of the most romantic and interesting postal histories in the world belongs to Australia. Isolated from other nations by thousands of miles of ocean, Australia's early postal system relied on whaling ships to bring mail from the rest of the world. During the mid-1800s these great sailing ships were replaced with the faster and more powerful steamships. One of the most interesting areas of postal history concerns the different signs and symbols used through the ages to urge the postal carrier to hurry the mail to its destination. Sweden had the interesting tradition of attaching two small feathers to the letter by a wax seal. This indicated the need for speed in transit. If black and white feathers were combined, this implied "Very urgent. Travel night and day!" Canada's Post Office was established under the British crown in 1763. However, it was not until 1851 that Canada issued her first postage stamp. This beautiful red stamp depicted a beaver - the world's first pictorial stamp. Although illumination is widely regarded as a medieval artform par excellence, it traces its origins back to ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. The classical artists illustrated text with a continuous chronological sequence of scenes, often filling an entire page. The subjects were idealized yet lifelike -- human forms painted against a background of classical architecture. The colors used were ever-so-delicate and the works showed a quite realistic perspective. The illuminated artform grew more popular as people used it to preserve and pass on their religious beliefs. Indeed, there came a time when the chief purpose of illumination was to glorify the Scriptures. At first, the artisans who created these illuminating works were monks working anonymously out of humble devotion to the Scriptures. Often rich princes and churchmen commissioned entire volumes of the Scriptures, theological works and other religious writings as an act of great piety. Later, as wealth and worldly interests increased, illuminating artists were often famous professional laymen who created both secular and religious illuminations. These illuminations were commissioned by private individuals, often moved as much by personal pleasure as by devotion to God. The Iris -- depicted on this original artwork -- was among the figures which were often hand-painted on manuscripts by devoted medieval monks. On May 15, 1918, U.S. Army pilots, flying Curtiss JN4Hs -- biplanes affectionately known as "Jennies" -- made postal history by flying the first U.S. air-mail route. Lt. Torrey Webb took off from a makeshift airfield at New York's Belmont Park racetrack bound for Philadelphia. Meanwhile, at Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., President and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson were among the spectators eagerly awaiting the takeoff of another Jenny. For more than 20 minutes, Pilot George L. Boyle futilely attempted to start the plane's engine. Just as the president was about to leave, a voice from the crowd cried "gasoline!" The crew quickly realized they had neglected to fill the aircraft's gas tanks. Once the situation was rectified, Boyle was finally airborne. Unfortunately, misfortune struck again. The misguided pilot lost his bearings and, in an effort to seek help, wrecked the Jenny by attempting to land on a country road. However, another flyer completed Boyle's mission and the first day of airmail service was considered a success. Over the next few years, planes became better adapted to their tasks. Before airfields and aircraft were equipped with adequate illumination, mail had been forwarded by rail during the evening hours. This gate used to be part of the former elaborate bridge which spanned across the Landwehrcanal between Berlin and Charlottenburg. Today the Gate spans only the Strasse de 17 Juni. The Gate was constructed between 1907 and 1908 after plans by Professor Bernhard Schaede. Its pillars once formed a barrier between the Charlottenburg University Center and the parks of the neighboring Zoological Gardens. Following a suggestion by Kaiser Wilhelm II, sculptor Heinrich Baucke created the larger-than-life bronze statues of the first Prussian King, Frederic I and his wife, Sophie Charlotte in 1909. Baucke's bronze of Sophie Charlotte points with her right hand in the direction of Charlottenburg Castle. Before the bridge's destruction in World War II, the two inner bridge piers had been decorated by two bronze relief groups by Georg Wroba. "Stormy Waters" stood on the north and "Quiet Waters" stood on the south. But because of the enormous costs involved in recreating the originals, they were not reconstructed after the war. The bridge structure is over sixty feet high and was designed in the Renaissance style; it used to be part of the border between the city of Berlin and the city of Charlottenburg and was meant to be the counterpart of the Brandenburg Gate. As the Middle Ages progressed, magnificent illuminated manuscripts became quite ornate. Yet, they continued to enhance the beauty of the books they adorned and added greatly to the readers' enjoyment. During this time, around the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, there was a growing interest in brightly colored border-frames which actually framed the text in colors of green and scarlet. Figures like those shown in the stamp on this First Day Cover were scattered liberally through the manuscripts. The figures on this stamp are taken from the fifteenth century manuscript entitled the Berlin Parchment Manuscript which was probably created in Germany between 1520 and 1530. Like many manuscripts of its day, the Berlin Parchment Manuscript was alive with the bright colors of flowers and the interesting animals of the garden. Many of these colors actually sparkled with gold and silver. Indeed, miniature painting is not considered to be true illumination unless it uses gold or silver to create a beautiful shimmering effect. Since many of the works embellished with the miniature illuminations were religious books -- prayer books and scriptures -- the subjects of the illuminations often had religious significance. Celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary in 1985, the Royal Canadian Navy was established by an act of the British Parliament on May 4, 1910. Originally equipped with only two training cruisers -- the HMCS Niobe for the East Coast, and the HMCS Rainbow for the West Coast -- the Royal Canadian Navy grew rapidly with the outbreak of World War I. The relatively small fleet -- seven thousand men by 1917 -- aided the Allied war effort by conducting antisubmarine patrols across the Atlantic. The fleet increased beginning in 1923 with the formation of the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve and the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. By World War II, there were over nine hundred ships in the RCN, 375 of which were armed for offensive action, manned by a total of approximately 95,000 volunteers. Again, the Canadian Navy was charged with opening the sea lanes in the Atlantic; their fighting spirit provided safe passage for troop and cargo ship convoys against the dreaded German U-boats. The link between Great Britain and the Canadian Northwest Atlantic Command proved particularly vital in late 1942, when Canadian warships escorted the Anglo-American invasion force to North Africa. After the war, the reserve forces were reorganized while the RCN continued to provide aid during the Korean Conflict, and bolster its NATO commitments. Perhaps the most famous image in the series, this depicts the USS Nautilus, one of the country's first nuclear powered submarines. "It was an indelible logo in its day. Set against a gradated gray background, the shell was a virtual cornucopia of progress. It should be noted that the ongoing project to construct the Nautilus was so top secret that Nitsche was only provided a basic idea of what the submarine would ultimately look like. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. The Universal Postal Union, a specialized agency of the United Nations, was established to improve postal service throughout the world by ensuring international collaboration. At the beginning of the 19th century, postal relations between nations consisted of a bewildering array of bilateral treaties, which were further confused by a diversity of currencies and units of weight. Postal charges were largely calculated by distance traveled. In addition, the recipient of the letter, rather than the sender, was responsible for expenses incurred! In 1837, British educator and reformer Rowland Hill first proposed charging a single uniform rate for mail delivery, based on weight rather than distance, and the use of prepaid postage stamps. On September 15, 1874, representatives of 22 countries met at the first International Postal Congress to sign a "Treaty concerning the Establishment of a General Postal Union." This organization became responsible for the adoption of uniform postal rates and units of weight between all member nations. In 1878, the second International Postal Congress was held and the body's name was changed to Universal Postal Union (UPU). On July 1, 1948, the UPU became a specialized agency of the United Nations. Over the years, the UPU has extended its functions to cover other international services provided by postal administrations, including money orders, parcel post, postal checks, cash on delivery and savings banks. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Germany 120 + 60pf Medieval Manuscript Illumination stamp issued October 15, 1985. During the Middle Ages, the medieval mind delighted in ornate and colorful art. And nowhere is this love more evident than in medieval manuscripts, for they are alive with intricate and colorful drawings created in the margins and at the beginnings of chapters by patient monks working by hand. Known as illuminations, these miniature works of art virtually illuminate the pages of the ancient manuscripts with their bright colors and intricate designs. But beyond their beauty, the illuminations also mark an important milestone in history, for their disappearance -- with the invention of printing -- signified the end of an antiquated age and became a strong signal of the coming of modern culture. Illumination reached its highest form in the 14th and 15th centuries, when pages were decorated with gold, silver and all the colors of the rainbow. Indeed, the gray parchment was lighted with floriated letters, margins filled with leaves and branches and scenes from the painter's own life. Through their works, the illuminators imbued the written page with a beauty and attractiveness beyond the powers of a mere scribe alone. Since many of the illuminated manuscripts were religious in nature, the figures illuminated often had religious significance.
