Paul Ninas (American/New Orleans, 1903-1964) , "Untitled (Carnival Scene)", c. 1938, graphite on paper, unsigned, artist estate label with title and date on backing paper, 17 1/2 in. x 35 in., framed Provenance: Collection of Allison Kendrick, The Carroll-Crawford House, New Orleans. Note: Paul Ninas lived and worked in New Orleans from 1932 until his death in 1964. After his arrival in the city, his modernist Caribbean subjects transitioned to South Louisiana ones – classic street scenes, local industry, wharves and of course, Carnival. The large-scale graphite drawing offered here captures all the frenetic energy, chaos, and licentiousness of a Mardi Gras parade route. The line of figures, facing the passing horse-drawn float barely seen in the background, reach for tokens thrown by riders and otherwise engage in Mardi Gras revelry. The careful details of the masks, costumes, and discarded wine bottle manifest into a timeless scene of the annual bacchanalian celebration. The strong horizontal format of the drawing lends credence to the thought that the work is likely a study for a mural. Ninas completed two WPA murals, one at the Maybin School in New Orleans and the other in the post office of Henderson, Texas, but sadly neither survived. He also was privately commissioned to create a four-panel mural at the Sazerac Bar in 1938 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans and, in 1945, three large panels for the Delta Line, an ocean-going passenger steamship based in New Orleans. This drawing bears striking stylistic similarity to the murals in the Sazerac Bar, likely completed around the same time. Ref.: Kemp, John R. “Paul Ninas.” 64 Parishes. www.64parishes.org. Paul Ninas (American/New Orleans, 1903-1964), "Spanish Colonial Buildings, probably Havana, Cuba", oil and mixed media on masonite, signed lower right, 24 in. x 36 in., framed. Note: Paul Ninas was one of the pioneer modernists of the South, often described as the “Dean of Modern Art” in New Orleans. Active in the city from 1932 until his death, Ninas was extensively well-traveled, having spent time in Europe, Africa and the West Indies. The artist spent the years prior to his arrival in New Orleans living and working on his coconut and lime plantation on the island of Dominica in the West Indies. Each locale he visited influenced Ninas' studies and artistic output. The painting offered here is a beautiful example of a Spanish Colonial streetscape, depicted in a bright Fauvist palette with rectangles of color under an anthropomorphic sky. The influences of Picasso are clear, most likely originating from the artist's visits to the Delgado Museum of Art's major Picasso exhibition organized by the Museum of Modern Art and presented in December 1940. Ninas also incorporated mixed media into the composition, something with which he was continually experimenting during the 1940s and 50s. He chose to delineate the details of the doors and balustrades, which help identify this unique architecture and provide a sense of place and context to the painting. Notebooks by the artist include drawings from his time spent in the Caribbean, and particularly Cuba, in the 1930s, perhaps providing inspiration for this important work. Paul Ninas (American/New Orleans, 1903-1964), "Dominica", oil on canvas, unsigned, 30 1/4 in. x 40 in., framed. Provenance: Estate of the Artist, Le Mieux Gallery, New Orleans, LA. Note: After years traveling throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Northern Africa, before settling in New Orleans in 1932, Paul Ninas owned a plantation on the island of Dominica, part of the Lesser Antilles and located approximately 400 miles southeast of Puerto Rico. Having been greatly influenced by the works of Paul Gauguin and Henri Matisse, who also painted in tropical locales, Ninas found the landscape, the people, and the way of life of Dominica inspirational. Using a painting style reminiscent of Gauguin, yet clearly influenced by the cubist movement, Ninas combines both static and fluid elements into his composition. This painting technique works well with a palette consisting of mostly monochromatic greens and browns, yet incorporating pops of red, which draw the eye around the scene of the daily life of the people of Dominica.

Note: Paul Ninas was an early, influential modernist of the South, often described as the “Dean of Modern Art” in New Orleans. In December 1940, the Delgado Museum in New Orleans presented a major Picasso exhibition organized by the Museum of Modern of Art. The show made an impact on Ninas, for his work becomes increasingly abstract from this point forward. The painting offered here certainly shows the influence of Picasso with its cubist figures and strong geometry. The brightly colored composition favors primary colors for the figures set against a green ground.

Paul Ninas (American/New Orleans, 1903-1964) "Lilly Valley, Dominika, West Indies", 1929, oil on canvas, 28-3/4" x 36", titled, signed and dated on canvas verso. Framed. Provenance: Private collection, Pennsylvania. Note: Paul Ninas is one of New Orleans' best-known painters, graphic artists and decorators of the second quarter of the twentieth century. He completed formal studies at the Royal Academy in Vienna, the Beaux Arts Academy and in the atelier of Andre L'Hote. His experiences in Paris exposed him to the emerging modernist movement. This lush landscape was painted during Ninas' time in the West Indies. He spent several years there painting the native women and tropical landscapes, experiences that were similar to Paul Gaugin.
