      (1830 Salwarschienen bei Königsberg - 1888 Düsseldorf) Winterliche Bauernhochzeit in Ostpreußen (Ermland-Masuren) Vielfigurige Szene vor einer alten, gotischen Backsteinkirche, aus welcher die Hochzeitsgesellschaft kommt, im Vordergrund wartende Pferdeschlitten. 1879 entstandenes Hauptwerk des polnisch stämmigen Malers, der hierin virtuos die Genreszene mit einer lebendigen Pferdedarstellung und einer atmosphärisch gestimmten Winterlandschaft verbindet. Nikutowski begann sein Malereistudium in Königsberg, setzte es an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf bei Carl Friedrich Lessing fort, folgte ihm 1859 nach Karlsruhe und ließ sich endgültig 1865 in Düsseldorf nieder. Dort wurde er zum bestens integrierten und anerkannten Mitglied der Düsseldorfer Malerschule, zumal er seit 1879 an der Akademie lehrte. Das Oeuvre Nikutowskis, der seit 1861 vielfach ausstellte, umfasst außer Genrebildern insbesondere Schlachtengemälde, beides oft in winterlich verschneiten Landschaften. Zu letzteren zählten insbesondere Szenen aus den Napoleonischen Kriegen bzw. Befreiungskriegen von 1812/13, Motive aus der polnischen Geschichte, darunter Episoden aus dem polnischen Januaraufstand 1863. Mit besonderer Leidenschaft schilderte er Reitergruppen und Pferde, die auch in diesem Gemälde wesentliche Elemente der Komposition sind. Öl/Lwd.; L. u. sign. u. dat. 1879. 51 cm x 80 cm. Rahmen. CONTACT US SKU#: 122264 US Shipping $60 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Johann Arthur Severin Nikutovsky was a Prussian artist and teacher of Polish origin, a representative of the Dusseldorf Art School. He mainly painted genre and battle paintings.He received his primary art education in Konigsberg, then continued it at the Dusseldorf Academy of Arts under Karl Friedrich Lessing; in 1859, following his teacher, he moved to Karlsruhe, and in 1865 he returned to Dusseldorf, where he lived until the end of his life.His first works were small-format genre paintings; later he painted battle scenes, including those depicting the events of the January Uprising of 1863 in Russian Poland. From 1880 until his death in 1888, Nikutovsky was a professor of anatomy at the Dusseldorf Academy. This period includes his works on comparative anatomy and the theory of proportions, which were not published. His passion was also the depiction of galloping horses (including groups of horses), and paintings on this subject were often highly acclaimed by critics.His son Erich (1872-1921) also became an artist and devoted himself mainly to landscape painting.Of the paintings by Nikutovsky, the more famous are "Crossing the Berezina", "Russian sentries hunt down Polish smugglers", "French flight after the Battle of Leipzig", "Return of the warrior", "Funeral of a Polish freedom fighter", "Fire in the village", "Prayer before the battle".

      Interesting oil on canvas scene shows a four-horse drawn supply wagon being driven by a soldier at a fast gallop. The wagon includes livestock, barrels, and hay. On either side are two soldiers on horseback with a soldier in the background, also on horseback. Another soldier is leaving a house with the village beyond. On the right, crossing a fence is another group of soldiers which appear to be the enemy. A nice subject matter with lots of action. Signed lower left and dated "1867". Housed in an antique, possibly original, gesso decorated gold frame with modern artist plaque. SIZE: 16-1/4" x 23-3/4". CONDITION: Very good, relined with some inpainting. 9-21569
