After attending school in Innsbruck, he went to Munich against his parents' will to study painting and, after studying with Defregger and Kaulbach, to Milan and Florence. In 1893 he moved to Merano, where he lived until 1908, when he returned to Innsbruck with his family. From 1920, when Nikodem, who had worked in the state postal service, retired early, he was able to devote himself entirely to painting. In the 1920s he had successful exhibitions at home and abroad, but during the Nazi era he was excluded from various artists' associations and many of his works were confiscated as degenerate art and partially destroyed. From the time of the Second World War until his death in 1940, Artur Nikodem only practiced his art privately and without any exhibition opportunities. Artur Nikodem also worked as a photographer and left behind a large photographic work with oriental motifs from his time as k. and k. Telegraph officer from 1916 to 1918 and photographs of his partners. His paintings are characterized by depictions of Tyrolean landscapes. During his military service in the navy, he experienced the Mediterranean as far as Egypt. In 1893 he moved to Merano, where he lived until 1908, when he returned to Innsbruck with his family. In 1920 Nikodem, who had worked in the state postal service, was retired early and from then on he could devote himself entirely to painting. In the 1920s he had successful exhibitions in Austria and abroad, but during the National Socialist era he was expelled from various artists' associations; many of his works were confiscated as degenerate art and in some cases destroyed. In the period of the Second World War until his death in 1940 Artur Nikodem practiced his artistic activity only in private and without exhibition opportunities. Artur Nikodem was also active as a photographer and left behind a large photographic oeuvre with oriental motifs from his time as a k. u. k. Telegraph officer from 1916 to 1918 as well as photographs of his companions. His painterly work is characterized by Tyrolean landscape depictions. Nikodem's work is an important part of the Tyrolean modernism of the interwar period, which is characterized by the confrontation with the new movements of the Munich scene and yet is attached to the tradition of Tyrolean landscape painting. However, the roots of his painting also lie in Viennese Art Nouveau and Secessionism. According to Gert Artmann, his work "experienced the full opening in the direction of Cézanne and Rodin through the short stay in Paris.[...] In the twenties he approached the Expressionism of an Albin Egger-Lienz in some phases." The here presented work from the time of the First World War, that was supposed to bring down the Ottoman Empire, shows a lady in a music bar in Istanbul or Constantinople. Trained in Munich by Defregger and Kaulbach, the Innsbruck artist enjoyed international success as a landscape painter from 1920 until his career ended with the Nazi takeover. He did not use photography for templates, but as a medium in its own right and experimented in many photographic genres and pictorial languages in his mostly very small-format prints; yet his astonishing photographic oeuvre did not receive attention until the 1980s. This lot features the artist’s second wife Barbara Hoyer (1907–1970), who posed for many of his staged photographs.
