Dionys van Nijmegen, Samson and Delilah

Signed lower right: D: Van Nymegen Dionys van Nijmegen belongs to a well-known family of artists from the northern Netherlands. His father was the painter Elias van Nijmegen, whose pupil he was. Jacob de Wit was also his teacher. He was a member of the Rotterdam Painters' Guild from 1743.

Dionys Van Nijmegen (1705-1789) - Open air music party

Pen and black ink, grey ink, watercolour on laid paper, with decorative lower border 47 x 34 cm. 18 1/2 x 13 1/4 in) The composition of the present drawing, including the decorative border, relates very closely to a number of drawings by Nijmegen held in the Rijksmuseum, and in particular the drawing 'Ontwerp voor een kamerbeschildering met musicerende jongelui' (see: RP-T-1968-172). The arrangement of figures, while slightly different in parts, are essentially of the same design, and it is possible that the present drawing was a study for the same work.

VAN NIJMEGEN h: 35 w: 24 cm Commentaire : Le délicieux van Nijmegen ne cherche pas le réalisme, il se veut plus allégorique. Il met en présence trois instruments peu susceptibles de concerter: une trompe de chasse à gauche, un dessus de viole avec une tenue de la main gauche très peu naturelle et une flûte traversière en deuxième plan. Si la forme du violon posé au premier plan n'est pas très précise, le pupitre à droite est lui du plus grand intérêt documentaire.
