          VASLAV NIJINSKY, VASLAV NIJINSKY, early 20th century, French, a rare satin and silk Nijinsky doll dressed in Russian Ballets Russes-style outfit, with label 'made by Mda Wall', 41cm high Vaslav Nijinsky (1890-1950) was a ballet dancer and choreographer cited as the greatest male dancer of the early 20th century. Born in Kiev to Polish parents, Nijinsky grew up in Imperial Russia, but considered himself to be Polish. He was celebrated for his virtuosity and for the depth and intensity of his characterisations. He could dance en pointe, a rare skill among male dancers at the time, and was admired for his seemingly gravity-defying leaps.

          [Autograph] Nijinsky, Vaslav (1890-1950). Ballet dancer and choreographer, perhaps the greatest male dancer of the early 20th century. 2 Pieces. (1) Nijinsky’s signature on a 2 3/4" x 4 3/4" slip of brown paper. (2) Typed Letter by his sister, signed “B. [Bronislava] Nijinsky, oblong 8vo, 1 1/2p, July 24, 1947, Mittersill Castle, Mittersill, Austria, to Mr. Heuschkel, conveying Nijinsky’s signature. “We thank you both for your very kind thoughts and feelings towards us…I am going to write a book upon Mr Nijinskys experiences since he went to Kreuzlingen and during this second war…a month ago I finished a novel.” She was a talented dancer and choreographer in her own right. Small censorship stamp within the body of type. Framed 28" x 21" with reproduced portrait and images of Nijinsky’s dancing. TLS laid into envelope attached to the backing of the frame. Condition Sight condition very good, not examined out of frame.
