NIEUHOF, Johan (1618-1672). Legatio Batavica ad magnum Tartariae chamum Sungteium, modernum Sinae imperatorem. Amsterdam: Van Meurs, 1668.

          Est: €1,500 - €2,500

A copy in excellent condition, with clearly printed plates, of the first Latin edition of the account of Nieuhof's travels to China between 1655 and 1657, in the service of the VOC (Dutch East India Company), with the aim of convincing the Qing Emperor to open trade relations. The publisher Van Meurs commissioned almost 150 engravings based on Nieuhof's original sketches, illustrating the work with images of the Chinese people, architecture and infrastructure, cities and landscapes, flora and fauna. This important iconography of China influenced the European taste for chinoiserie in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Folio, (306 x 200 mm). Engraved frontispiece, title-page with vignette depicting Prudence, 1 large folding map 'Carte du Voyage', 35 engraved double-page plates, numerous illustrations in the text, in very good internal condition (missing engraved portraits of the author and dedicatee as in almost all copies, probably never bound in). Contemporary binding in Dutch-style stiff vellum, manuscript title to spine. (1)

NIEUHOF, Johan (1618-1672). Gedenkwaerdige zee en lant reize...landschappen van West en Oostindien. Amsterdam: Jacob van Meurs, 1682.

          Est: €500 - €800

Scarce first edition, unfortunately lacking the geographical maps, of this description of the Dutch colonial territories in South-East Asia and South America by Johan Nieuhof, who travelled to Brazil from 1640 to 1649 before held a post in Batavia, present-day Jakarta, serving the West India Company from 1667 to 1670. The first volume on the East Indies illustrates with picturesque images towns and villages, the habits of the natives, exotic animals, and the customs of the Dutch settlers. The second work covers the world and missionary history of Brazil since its discovery by the Portuguese. Compared to the bibliography, our volume has reversed the order of the two parts. 2 parts in one volume, Folio, (318 x 200mm). Part I: 'Gedenkweerdige brasilaense' with 1 portrait of the author, 1 coat of arms, 1 double-page plate and 2 engraved plates outside the text, 9 illustrations in the text (missing title page and map of Brazil). Part II: 'Oostindien', typographical title page, 42 plates of which 26 double page, 24 illustrations in the text (missing 2 maps (pages 7, 107, 117) slightly browned). Contemporary full vellum binding, title lettered to spine in manuscript. Provenance: 'ex libris Quinti Scilii', eighteenth-century Roman antiquarian. (1)

Folio: [16 incl. front.]-290, [2]-134-[1-1 bl.] pp. (some occ. minor spotting or soiling; folding map missing). - First edition of the French translation of this great travel account by J. Nieuhof (1618-1672), appearing the same year as the original in Dutch. Engr. ill.: title (the Emperor, seated with a globe looking down on a convicted criminal), title vign., full-page portr. of J.B. Colbert, headpiece and initial on dedication to Colbert, 34 double-page plates (views of Chinese cities, i.a. the Forbidden City) and 110 large pl. in text (villages, ceremonies, costumes, plants, animals, ...). Without the folding map of China. The 1st part gives an account of the travels through the Chinese provinces and cities, the 2nd part is about the natural world of the country, and the practices and habits of the Chinese people. The mission sparked the Dutch trade relations with China. Between 1655 and 1657, Nieuhof traversed the country with the merchants de Goyer and de Keyzer. Their reception there was quite reserved and the commercial outcome rather limited. But Nieuhof's book was an immediate success, largely because of the impressive illustrations of this little known part of the world, after drawings by the author and compiled by his brother Hendrik. Title in red and black. - Ref. Tiele 801 (note). - Landwehr (VOC) 540. - Cordier (Sinica) 2345. - STCN (i.a. BL). - Prov. Ms. entry dated 1738 on front pastedown.
