ANSELMO MIGUEL NIETO (Valladolid, 1881 - 1964). "Mother and daughter", 1920. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower margin.

      Est: €13,000 - €14,000

ANSELMO MIGUEL NIETO (Valladolid, 1881 - 1964). "Mother and daughter", 1920. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower margin. Measurements: 150 x 160 cm; 185 x 195 cm (frame). In this scene, Nieto transcends the genre of the family portrait thanks to a masterful handling of the light and to the gesture of tenderness and maternal-filial respect printed in something as simple as holding hands. Thus, the violet lights of the sunset permeate everything: they give a coral patina to the whites and a satin sheen to the clothes. The flesh tones, likewise, present a delicate whiteness that does not idealize the features, conveying something essential of the kind yet firm character of the mother, and of the subtle demure of the daughter with long braids. The son of a modest family, Nieto studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Valladolid, then directed by José Martí y Monsó. He went to Madrid in 1900 to continue his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where he was taught by Moreno Carbonero and Alejo Vera. During this period he met great artists, among them Pablo Picasso. After finishing his studies, he obtained a scholarship to travel to Rome and, in 1903, to Paris, where he stayed for two years. He settled permanently in Madrid in 1906, and was a regular at the artistic and literary gatherings that he shared with Baroja, Julio Camba, Valle-Inclán, Cossío and Benavente, among others. At that time his recognition took off both nationally and internationally, participating in the Fine Arts Exhibitions of Buenos Aires (1910) and Munich (1912) and being awarded a gold medal in both. In 1922 he went to Argentina with his friend Julio Romero de Torres, and returned again in 1937, this time staying for nine years. He returned to Spain in 1946, and in 1952 he was named academician of San Fernando. Anselmo Miguel Nieto's art evolves from an initial expressionist realism towards a militant modernism, which he conceives within rich luminosity and colorism. He is an extraordinary painter of portraits -especially of women-, but he interprets them in an allegorical and sensual sense, as Romero de Torres, Zuloaga, Rodríguez Acosta or Beltrán Massés made fashionable with him at that time. In the radiant luminosity and ease not incompatible with the vigorous realistic detail, he reminds us of the best Sorolla, who had a strong influence on the painters of Anselmo Miguel Nieto's generation. In short, it is halfway between realism and a vague idealistic and elegant sophistication, very impregnated with literature. Nieto is represented in the Fine Arts Museums of Pontevedra and Oviedo, the National Theater Museum in Almagro and the Academy of San Fernando, as well as in important national and foreign private collections.

      Est: €35,000 - €37,500

Anselmo Miguel Nieto (Valladolid, April 1, 1881-Madrid, November 4, 1964) Son of a modest family, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Valladolid, then directed by the artist José Martí y Monsó. He went to Madrid in 1900 to continue his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, in the company of who would become his inseparable lifelong friend, the Bilbao painter Aurelio Arteta. At that time he met great artists, among others Pablo Picasso. With a scholarship, he traveled to complete his training in Rome and Paris, settling permanently in the capital of Spain in 1906. It is the moment in which his recognition took off, participating in international exhibitions in Buenos Aires and Munich. In 1912 he held an individual exhibition of paintings in Madrid in the "La Tribuna" salon, this coincided with the National Exhibition of Fine Arts that took place in the Retiro Park. The technique used by the painter is egg tempera, previously used by Venetian painters and later also adopted by Arnold Böcklin, Franz Seraph Lenbach, Franz von Stuck, Julius Diez or Fritz Erler. Among his portrait works, some portraits should be highlighted such as: the Marchioness of Amboage, that of the Marchioness of Argüeso with her three children (1909), that of Victoria Ocampo or that of Valle Inclán, who was one of its main defenders. Important private collection, Madrid.

      Est: €20,000 - €25,000

ANSELMO MIGUEL NIETO (Valladolid, 1881 - 1964). "Female nude", 1913. Oil on canvas. Signed in the right margin. Provenance: private collection acquired from the artist's heirs. The Reina Sofía Museum has on loan to the Jaén Museum a work in which the same woman is represented, in a very similar pose. Measurements: 109 x 160 cm; 111 x 162 cm (frame). This female nude has a timeless character, inspired by classical forms, but completely renewed in language. The contours have been modelled gradually, avoiding the line in favour of soft shading, which accentuates the lady's halo of mystery, both elusive and carnal. The son of a modest family, Nieto studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Valladolid, then directed by José Martí y Monsó. ANSELMO MIGUEL NIETO Valladolid 1881-Madrid 1964 Nude woman. 1913 Oil on canvas Signed and dated Measurements 108.5 x 160 cm Origin: - Private collection. The work represents in close-up the naked body of a woman of sensual beauty who poses for the painter lying on a bed, looking directly at the viewer in an insinuating way. The composition is inspired by the nudes of Velázquez or Goya, which in turn evoke the iconographic tradition that this theme had in the Renaissance at the hands of Raphael or Titian. From the Venetians, particularly from Tintoretto, he took their loose technique and sense of decorativeness; from his contemporary Sorolla, the treatment of light; and from English Pre-Raphaeliteism and his companion Julio Romero de Torres, the symbolist line. The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía has on loan at the Museo de Jaén a work in which the same woman is represented, with a similar pose, in front of a still life of fruit and a monkey that appear in the background . Dated in 1920 but with slightly larger dimensions, the painting that we are presenting now could be the study prior to the final composition, however, on the far right you can appreciate the still life and the monkey that the artist had to hide.
