NESTRATH HAGEN 1.11.1941' Dimensions: 27.6 x 14.1 x 6 cm Good condition The work of German artist Karel Niestrath is influenced by his experiences during the war; the auction record for a bronze by the artist is currently set at more than €2,000 This high-relief depicts a mother who cuts a slice of a loaf of bread. A small child expectantly stretches out to the bread, clinging to her legs. The relief is monogramed lower center 'K - N'. On the reverse it is signed, inscribed and dated 'K. NESTRATH HAGEN 1.11.1941'. The relief shows tiny bumped spots at the nose and the right hand of the figure as well as fractionally very faint surface soiling. The overall condition is good. It measures 27.6 x 14.1 x 6 cm. Karel Niestrath (1896-1971) Born in Salzuflen, the artist completed an apprenticeship as a sculptor. After serving in World War I, from which he returned injured, he began studying at the Art School in Bielefeld, and later continued at the Art Academy in Dresden. Niestrath`s works, which are influenced by the experience of war were regarded as degenerated during the Nazi regime. After the Second World War Niestrath worked as a teacher at various institutions and created among other reliefs for the monument Bittermark in Dortmund.
