    • 1960s Adam Niemczyc Fresco - Girl From Siena
      Jan. 20, 2022

1960s Adam Niemczyc Fresco - Girl From Siena

      Est: $800 - $1,200

Adam Niemczyc (Polish, 1914-2009). "Girl From Siena" fresco, ca. 1960s. Signed "A.N." (inscribed in fresco) at lower left. A beautiful portrait by early modern Polish artist, Adam Niemczyc. Niemczyc presents an elegant woman, bust length, with her elongated form facing forward, donning a vermilion garment with a delineated bustier. She gazes ahead with an enchanting visage comprised of stylized features - ovoid eyes, severely arched, pencil-thin brows, a long slender nose, pursed full lips, and a pointy chin - all topped by a modern bob hairdo. A striking modern portrait that suggests the influence of Amedeo Modigliani in which Niemczyc ironically worked in fresco, a medium favored by during the Classical and Renaissance periods, to render an avant-garde image. Size: 26" L x 18" W (66 cm x 45.7 cm) Size of frame: 32.625" L x 24.625" W (82.9 cm x 62.5 cm) The title of this piece - "Girl From Siena" - probably alludes to the noteworthy fresco paintings in Siena, especially at the Palazzo Publico which is covered in fresco paintings. For example, Ambrogio Lorenzetti's fresco cycle entitled, "The Allegory and Effects of Good and Bad Government" (1338-1339) adorns the Sala della Pace (Room of Peace). Born in 1914, Adam Niemczyc was a Polish postwar and contemporary artist who studied at Jan Kazimierz University. Niemczyc stayed in Budapest during World War II, studied art, and graduated from the Academy in Krakow in 1948. Following this, he earned a doctorate in art history at the Jagiellonian University. ADAM NIEMCZYC (POLISH 1914-?)

      Est: $200 - $300

ADAM NIEMCZYC (POLISH 1914-?) Portrait of Mrs. B. Stephens, 1964 mixed media on wood panel 50.4 x 30 cm (19 3/4 x 11 3/4 in.) signed, titled, dated and inscribed on verso PROVENANCE Collection of Bart N. Stephens, Cultural Attache of the American Embassy in Warsaw, Poland, 1963-1965 LOT NOTES Bart N. Stephens spent several decades as a cultural affairs officer in Europe and Asia, during which time he was stationed in post-War Warsaw as a Cultural Attache for some years during the 60s. As Stephens writes in his essay Where Shall We Hang It? Notes on Collecting Polish Art, it was in Warsaw which had arisen Phoenix-like from the war`s inferno, [that he and his wife, an artist herself,] first became involved in the art scene and began collecting original art. [Discovering] an alive, talented, and varied community of artists in Poland. Coming into contact with the works by, and often with the artists themselves, Jan Cybis, Aleksander Kobzdej, and many other leading figures of the 1960s and 70s, Stephens at times found himself bidding on the same works as the Museum of Modern Art (as in the case of Nucleus by Zbignew Makowski). Polish painting was then seen as the ``new frontier`` of European art, with many foreign dealers waking up to its allure, and at times buying the contents of an artist`s studio outright. The Stephens collection thus presents a mid-century capsule of some of PolandÕs greatest modernists, with many of the works being eventually exhibited or included in European and American publications and exhibitions.
