Audley Dean Nicols (1875 - 1941) "Superstition Mountains" Oil on Canvas. Signed and dated on lower left. An illustrator by training, Audley Dean Nicols painted landscapes of the Desert Southwest. He earned regional and national recognition for his style of photographic realism in the depiction of the Southwest’s mountains and deserts, including election to the Southern National Academy of Design. His art career began when he moved to New York City and enrolled in classes at the Art Students League, studying under the illustrator and academic painter Kenyon Cox, and muralists Henry Siddons Mowbray and Edwin Howland Blashfield. Within two years he was working as an illustrator for Harper’s magazine, then for The Century, and was being included in salons and parties with famous illustrator-guests like Charles Dana Gibson and Howard Chandler Christy. In about 1912, Nicols began making annual trips to the Southwest. By 1915, his desert landscapes were being featured in special exhibitions at Pittsburgh’s Wunderly Brothers Gallery, one of the region’s two major art dealers. He exhibited at the San Antonio Competitives and in El Paso. Nicols studied at the Art Students League and the Metropolitan Museum of Art with figure painters Edwin H. Blashfield, Kenyon Cox, and Henry Siddons Mowbray. Nicols exhibited desert wildflower landscapes in all three San Antonio Competitive exhibitions in 1927, 1928, and 1929. In Oracle, Arizona, and Indian Oasis, Arizona, Nicols used an Impressionist's touch in the application of paint. While utilizing his prototypical landscape built around a road or trail, the artist included flora native to Arizona in the foreground of each painting, including saguaro, greasewood, and prickly pear. Moreover, Nicols captures in both paintings the background haze that he used successfully throughout his Texas career to render the Southwestern landscape.
