      Marion Nicoll graphite on paper "Canmore" 1946. Marion Florence (nee Mackay) Nicoll, was born in Calgary. She studied at the Ontario College of Art, 1927-1929, and under A.C. Leighton at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (now Alberta College of Art), 1929-1932. She accepted a teaching position in crafts and design at the Institute in 1933 and taught there for nearly thirty years. Through the influence of Leighton, Jock Macdonald and automatic drawing, and Will Barnet, her art evolved from landscape painting to a distinct style of classical abstraction. Both Marion and her husband, Jim, exhibited their art during the 1960s and 1970s. They were involved in a number of organizations in the community such as Alberta Society of Artists, Calgary Allied Arts Council, Calgary Kinsmen, Old Cabin Crafts Society, Bowness Recreation Centre and Bowness Library Board.

      Marion Nicoll graphite on paper "Canmore" 1946. Marion Florence Mackay Nicoll, was born in Calgary in 1909. She studied at the Ontario College of Art, 1927-1929, and under A.C. A set of three clay prints in colours on brown paper, 'Kow tow' and 'Drumheller' signed with the artist's monogram in pen 'MN' (lower right), titled and inscribed as proofs (lower left), 'Kow tow' also dated '1963' (lower right); each work signed with the artist's monogram in the plate and framed under passe-partout behind glass. Unexamined out of the frames, paper creased, some surface grime, losses of paper to 'Play', overall in good condition. Added: Drawing in felt pen and pencil on beige paper, signed, dated and titled 'M. Nicoll '65 MICHEAL' (lower right); (Micheal Davidson (1943 - 2009), on the reverse); under passe-partout. Light handling creases, otherwise in good condition.

A set of seven clay prints in colours: 'Expanding white' on J-cloth, signed 'M. Nicoll' and illegibly dated (lower right), numbered '2/14' and titled (lower left); and the other six on paper: 'The last bird', 'Prarie Landscape I' and 'Young family', each signed with the artist's monogram in pencil 'MN' (lower right), titled and inscribed 'TRIAL PROOF' (lower left), as well as three other versions of 'The last bird'; each work signed with the artist's monogram in the plate and framed under passe-partout behind glass. Unexamined out of the frames, paper creased and cockled, some surface grime and foxing spots, overall in good condition.

Leighton at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art, Calgary (1929-1932) and she also attended the summer school (now known as the Banff School of Fine Arts) under the same professor. From 1937 to 1938 she studied figure painting at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London, England, under Duncan Grant. In 1957, she studied under Will Barnet at the Emma Lake Seminar. From 1958 to 1959 she attended the Art Students League in New York. For thirty years, she taught at Calgary’s Provincial Institute of Technology and Art. She also gave classes at the summer school of the University of Alberta (1937-1938); extension classes (1946-1948); Banff School of Fine Arts (1946); the Cultural Development Board, Government of Alberta (1948-1949). She received various awards, including a Canada Council grant in 1958, a senior fellowship in 1966 and six honour certificates from the Royal Drawing Society, London, England, for teaching. She held several solo exhibitions, including at the Alberta College of Art (1959); Bowness Town Hall, Alberta. (1960-1965); Studio 61, Edmonton, Alberta (1961); Focus, Edmonton (1962, 1963, 1964) Upstairs Gallery, Toronto (1963); Yellow Door Gallery, Winnipeg (1964), among others.
