Attributed to Francis Nicholson (British, 1753-1844)

    Est: £200 - £400

Attributed to Francis Nicholson (British, 1753-1844) The Dropping Well, Knaresborough, Yorkshire watercolour and ink with scratching out 34 x 44.5cm Provenance: By descent within the family of Sir William Foster, 1st Baronet of Norwich (1798–1874), to Janet Foster, 8 Stanley Crescent, London, W11 The Dropping Well had long been a popular place for visitors, its waters being renowned for their healing powers and for its mythical status as the 'Petrifying Well' where objects were said to turn to stone. This was due to a geological phenomenon where objects were calcified by deposits from the waters. The River Nidd is shown to the left and the town of Knaresborough in the distance. After spending nine years in Whitby, Francis Nicholson moved to Knaresborough in 1792. Two further watercolours by Nicholson of this same viewpoint are recorded, one in the British Museum (1876,0510.925).
