Maria Longworth Nichols Storer, attribution for Rookwood Pottery, Important Early Limoges style vase with foxes chasing flying geese

    Est: $7,000 - $9,000

Provenance: Private Collection Catalog Note: Although not signed by the artist, we firmly believe this work was executed by Maria Longworth Nichols Storer. The decoration of foxes chasing flying geese shows a sense of humor and whimsy that Nichols often incorporated in her work. The fact that there were no other artists working for Rookwood in early 1881 as talented as Nichols also adds to the likelihood of it being her work. This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer for Rookwood Pottery, Rare and Monumental Limoges style jardiniere

    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer for Rookwood Pottery Rare and Monumental Limoges style jardiniere USA, 1882 glazed and gilt earthenware 12.625 h x 16.25 dia in (32 x 41 cm) Jardiniere features fruit blossoms, wild splashes of color and several small black spiders. Incised signature and date to underside 'Rookwood 1882' with painted artist's signature to body 'MLN'. Provenance: Private Collection, New York | Gifted to Private Collection, c. 1900 | Thence by descent Catalog Note: The present work was most likely done early in the year 1882 because of the hand-inscribed signature and date to underside ‘Rookwood 1882’, compared to more formal impressed markings typically seen on other examples from 1882. The jardiniere is made in two pieces, with the top half and the bottom half fused horizontally. This example was a gift at the turn of the last century from a wealthy New York couple for whom the seller's family worked. Family history indicates that there was a matching jardiniere which unfortunately did not survive. This piece has not had an easy life, but amazingly, it is still in one piece and standing proud. This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.

  • Maria Longworth Nichols Storer for Rookwood Pottery, attribution, Early and Important Limoges style vase
    Nov. 02, 2022

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer for Rookwood Pottery, attribution, Early and Important Limoges style vase

    Est: $7,000 - $9,000

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer for Rookwood Pottery, attribution Early and Important Limoges style vase USA, 1882 glazed and gilt earthenware 16.875 h x 15.75 w x 13.75 d in (43 x 40 x 35 cm) Vase features a snarling, toothy dragon, several demons trying to control the dragon with ropes and five muti-colored octopi on the front. The reverse shows an eel in the murky sea and several blue crabs. Topping off this Victorian masterpiece are two dolphin handles covered with fired-on gold which has also been used liberally on rim and base as enhancement. Impressed manufacturer's mark and date to underside 'Rookwood 1882'. Provenance: Cincinnati Art Galleries, The Glover Collection, 7 June 1991, Lot 308 | Private Collection | Humler & Nolan, Cincinnati, Holiday Sale 2005, 7 November 2005, Lot 1253 | Private Collection Catalog Note: Although not signed by Nichols, there is no doubt about authorship of this work. The octopi are smaller, yet identical, to those seen on Lot 2 in Toomey & Co.’s Rookwood & Ohio Art Pottery auction on November 10th, 2021, and the very distinctive, toothy dragon is her own. Nichols' dragons are a caricature of the classic, sleek Asian creature, as are her interpretations of the four-armed octopi. She is a singularity among Rookwood artists: as owner, she was not required to sign her work and her primitive style is completely unique. Another Nichols identifier is her comma-shaped white caps done in heavy slip. The cast dolphin handles are also worthy of note as they are typically only seen applied to works by Albert Valentien. All pieces featuring these handles are quite rare and were most likely special order. This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.

Attributed to Maria Longworth Nichols Storer (1849-1932) for Rookwood Pottery earthenware Dull Finish glaze Spanish water jug with several different types of beetles and flying insects, shape number 41 Cincinnati, Ohio, 1883 matte glazed ceramic impressed factory marks including a small kiln and Y for yellow clay 7 1/2"w x 6 1/8"d x 9 1/8"h Catalog Note: Why a Nichols attribution? Simply put, if a piece looks like Maria's work and is not signed by anyone else, then the nod goes to her. Many Rookwood decorators copied Nichols' work, but all who did signed their pieces. Only the boss would be allowed to avoid a small fine for not signing pieces. Besides, this looks like Maria's work and there is a diagonal band of semicircles with raised dots in the center that seems like something she would add.

    Est: $7,000 - $9,000

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer (1849-1932) for Rookwood Pottery monumental Limoges style earthenware vase with applied squeeze bag net holding fish and a shark along with two green, bug-eyed octopi and a small crab Cincinnati, Ohio, 1883 high glazed ceramic impressed factory marks, incised artist's initials on bottom 12"dia x 20"h Catalog Note: Nichols' most interesting works are her attempts to embrace the Japonesque style found in Hokusai's Manga. Where restraint is often a major tenet of Japanese art, Nichols was a product of the Victorian Era, where more was seen as appropriate. This large, hand-thrown vase features many strange sea creatures trapped in bright gold netting, thus capturing the essence of the "gilding the lily" aesthetic of the early 1880s.

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer (1849-1932) for Rookwood Pottery earthenware vase with a three-toed dragon, flying bats and fired-on gold decoration Cincinnati, Ohio, circa 1880 high glazed ceramic incised "Rookwoob [sic] Pottery Cin Ohio, M.L.N" 12 1/2"dia x 13"h Catalog Note: This is possibly one of the earliest pieces of Rookwood ever produced. Rookwood's first kiln was unloaded on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1880, and this may have been a part of that initial offering. Early Rookwood pieces from 1881 are incised in the same manner but clearly marked 1881. This was before the company had developed a standard marking system. There is reasonable belief that this is an 1880 piece in that it is not dated at all. It is clearly a classic example of Nichols' work. The fact that she misspelled the name of her own company is a curiosity; perhaps it was out of nervousness getting pieces ready to fire before Thanksgiving Day.
