    SOGA NICHOKUAN: MOUNTAINOUS PATHWAY

    Est: - €500

SOGA NICHOKUAN: MOUNTAINOUS PATHWAY Ink on paper. Japan, 17th centuryAtmospheric painting, masterly nuanced with wash to create space, and to attract our views to a scholar and his servant, who wander on the narrow path to reach the temple on top of the mountain; all rendered in the style of Song. The date of the artist are unknown; his father Soga Chokuan lived around 1600 and may be well originating from the Soga painter family in Echizen. Nichokuan gained importance for his landscape paintings (Sansui-e) and for his depictions of flowers and birds (Kacho-e); with seal to the right lower corner NICHOKUAN 二直庵.SIZE IMAGE 106,3 x 41,3 CM, SIZE SCROLL 199 x 53,2 CMFrom a German private collection
