Richard Henry Nibbs, English 1816-1893- Quayside scene with figures on a boat, and a windmill beyond; oil on canvas, signed 'RHNibbs' and indistinctly dated (lower left), the bearing stamp for 'Barnard & Son, London' verso, 46 x 35.7 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Nibbs was a self-taught artist, having initially trained as a musician, working as a cellist in the orchestra of the Theatre Royal in his hometown of Brighton. Nibbs' oeuvre consisted almost entirely of marine scenes, depicting boats on the open seas and in quiet harbours off the south coast of Britain or in European towns. The present work is therefore typical of the artist's output, with the windmill in the distance suggesting a Dutch setting.

Attributed to Richard Henry Nibbs, British 1816-1893 Shipping scenes at sunset; oils on canvas, each bears old inscription 'R. Nibbs' on the upper horizontal stretcher bars, one bears inscription 'R. Nibbs' on old backing paper, each 20.5 x 40.4 cm, a pair, (2). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Despite producing works on a variety of themes throughout his career, Nibbs was best-known as a marine artist. His maritime paintings generally capture the extreme mutability and volatility of the sea, depicting boats on calm, flat waters as often as on stormy seas. The present pair evoke a powerful sense of calm, with their small scale minimising the drama of the seas, and the romantic skies implying the coming of evening.

Footnote: Although painted slightly later, research suggests that this wreck may be that of the barque William which stranded on the rocks below Beachy Head sometime during the 1850s, precise date unknown. The fate of the wreck is equally obscure, with some sources stating she was eventually refloated whilst others say she was simply abandoned and left to break up.

Richard Henry Nibbs (1816-1893) Richard Henry Nibbs (1816-1893) Dutch fishing boats in heavy seas signed 'R H Nibbs' and dated 1856 l.r., inscribed with title verso, oil on canvas 80 x 120cm Richard Nibbs initially trained as a musician and he performed as a professional cellist with the Theatre Royal Orchestra. Born and raised in Brighton, Nibbs had ample opportunity for observing marine subjects and his natural talent and love of art led him to become a self-taught painter, facilitated by his inheritance of a considerable sum in 1840. His native Sussex coast was the subject of many of his works, although he also painted marine subjects in France and Holland. Not limited to purely coastal subjects, he also drew buildings and landscapes and exhibited at the Royal Academy.
