Born in Kakadjerri, situated on the Liverpool River plateau between Gunbalarya (Oenpelli) and Maningrida, Dick Nguleingulei Murrumurra's life spanned nearly a century. His formative years were spent in the hinterlands west of the Liverpool River, and he briefly attended school at Gunbalan in the 1930s. Subsequently, his endeavors took him across diverse landscapes - from working as a crocodile shooter on a cattle station at Goodparia to laboring in a timber camp within the Kakadu region. In 1965, Murrumurra relocated to Gunbalanya while maintaining a strong connection to his mother's homeland, Kurrukkur (Table Hill), which was being developed as an outstation. During the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, Murrumurra emerged as a pivotal figure in the bark painting movement while residing in Gunbalanya. He collaborated closely with Dr. Peter I. Carroll, a linguist and part-time art advisor, who was stationed at the Church Missionary Society in Oenpelli between 1967 and 1979. Murrumurra's artistic focus often centered on the Arnhem Plateau's stone country, his ancestral home. His depictions of stone country fauna, such as the freshwater crocodile, echidna, and kangaroo, reflect a hunter's acute sense of proportion, anatomy, and an innate connection to these creatures. Additionally, he translated stories of the spirits inhabiting the escarpment into vivid artworks. From the 1980s onward, Murrumurra predominantly worked at the Malkawo outstation, in close proximity to his ancestral Bularihdja clan lands, collaborating with fellow artist Lofty Bardayal Nadjamerrek and their respective families. His life ended tragically in 1988, on this land he cherished. Notably, in 1982, one of Nguleingulei's paintings was selected for reproduction on the 75-cent Australian stamp, a testament to his artistic prowess. This bark painting depicts the kangaroo clearly showing the internal organs of the animal. The kangaroo is being speared by a Nalidgidgi Mimi spirit who has a spear and woomera. His body is painted with ceremonial markings (a captured kangaroo always adopts this special stance).* (*"Inspired by Country. Jun. 23, 2020

Dick Nguleingulei - Kumuken - Freshwater Crocodile

    Est: $5,000 - $9,000

Dick Nguleingulei Murrumurru lived most of his life on the Liverpool River plateau in West Arnhem Land, where he was born around 1920. He dedicated himself to painting from 1965 until the end of his life. Murrumurru was a versatile, inventive, and eclectic bark painter. His subject matter focused on country animals such as kumoken (freshwater crocodile) and ngarrbek (echidna), which were painted with a hunter’s attuned sense of proportion, anatomy, and personality. He also painted stories and spirits from the stone country, such as the Wardbukarra-wardbukarra from nearby Manmoyi and the Mimih spirits that inhabit the escarpment. His works were included in many major exhibitions, including Keepers of the Secrets at the AGWA in 1990, Dreamings at the Asia Society in New York in 1988, Art of the First Australians in Kobe, Japan in 1986,  Kunwinjku Bim at the NGV in 1984, and The Art of Aboriginal Australia, which toured North America in 1974-76. Kumuken, a totem of the Dhuwa moiety, was the artist's mother's Dreaming. Kumuken the crocodile was the creator of the Liverpool area of Maningrida. After emerging from the earth, Kumuken went to the sea and made the shape of the river with its tail.

DICK NGULEINGULEI (1928-1988), BARK PAINTING ‘TOTEM KANGAROO’

    Est: €250 - €500

Dick Nguleingulei (1920-1988) Bark, pigments, string Oenpelli, Arnhem Land, Australia, 1966 This bark painting was created in Oenpelli, Arnhem Land, Australia in 1966. It was painted by Aboriginal artist Dick Murrumurru better known as Nguleingulei. The western Arnhem Land is known for its Aboriginal art. Over thousands of years the indigenous population created art in caves and on rocks in the area around the Oenpelli (Gunbalanya) community. The present painting belongs to one of the two art styles of the region – the X-ray style. It depicts a totem kangaroo with its bones and internal organs visible. Nguleingulei was tutored by his father, an aboriginal rock and bark painter. During the 1960s and 1970s he was based at Oenpelli, an Aboriginal community in west Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia, where he made a name for himself as a skilled and prolific bark painter. Like other artists from this region he predominantly painted images of common animal species in the typical X-ray style. Nguleingulei’s figurative forms show an accuracy, delicacy and sense of proportion reminiscent of the finest rock painters. On a solid red ochre background, he rendered animals and figures in white with details in red and yellow and sometimes black. Verso: Label from the ‘Aboriginal Art Centre’ with expertise dating to 1970 Dimensions: 60 x 123 cm Condition: The painting is in good condition with minor signs of age and wear Provenance: German private collection, acquired in the 1970s Auction result comparison: Mossgreen Auctions, AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS & OCEANIC ART, JULY 22, 2014, MELBOURNE, lot 142 (for a comparable work) < BR>RefDec241018
