Arnold Newman New York, (b. 1918-2006) Milton Avery, 1960 gelatin silver print Pencil signed lower right. Artist stamp verso. Biography from HowardGreenberg.com: Arnold Newman (1918-2006) is widely renowned for pioneering and popularizing the environmental portrait. With his method of portraiture, he placed his sitters in surroundings representative of their professions, aiming to capture the essence of an individual's life and work. Though this approach is commonplace today, his technique was highly unconventional in the 1930s when began shooting his subjects as such. He is also known for his carefully composed, abstract still lifes. Born in New York City, Newman grew up in Atlantic City, New Jersey and Miami Beach, Florida. He was given a scholarship to study art at the University of Miami from 1936 to 1938. He began his career in photography working at portrait studios in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and West Palm Beach, while making abstract and documentary photographs on his own. While socializing with students at what was then called the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts, he was introduced to an experimental approach to portraiture encouraged by Alexey Brodovitch, the influential art director of Harper's Bazaar who was teaching there at the time. In 1941, Beaumont Newhall—the first director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art at the time—and Alfred Stieglitz discovered his work and gave him an exhibition at the A.D. Gallery. In 1945, a solo show titled "Artists Look Like This" was exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and attracted national attention. The following year, Newman moved from Miami to New York, opened his own studio, and became a member of the American Society of Magazine Photographers. His environmental approach to portraiture was influenced by symbolism and impressionism, and defined by the imperative of captivating the viewer no matter how well known the subject was. While he specialized in photographing artists, Newman captured the likeness of a vast range of figures, from athletes and actors to presidents and politicians. Among his many sitters, Newman's impressive roster of subjects includes: Marlene Dietrich, John F. Kennedy, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Arthur Miller, Marilyn Monroe, Ronald Reagan, Mickey Mantle, Audrey Hepburn, Igor Stravinsky, Salvador Dali, Georgia O'Keefe, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Newman was an important contributor to publications such as the New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Life, Look, Holiday, Harper's Bazaar, Esquire, Town & Country, Scientific American, New York Times Magazine, and many others. In addition to numerous monographs, he contributed photographs to countless histories of photography, catalogues, articles and television programs throughout his career. Newman was the recipient of awards including the American Society of Media Photographers, The Lucie Award, The Royal Photographic Society Centenary Award as well as France's "Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters." In 2005, Photo District News named Newman as one of the 25 most influential living photographers. In 2006, Newman was awarded The Gold Medal for Photography by The National Arts Club. He is the recipient of nine honorary doctorates and has lectured and conducted workshops throughout the country and the world.

    Est: €2,000 - €2,400

ARNOLD NEWMAN (1918–2006) | Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz, New York City 1944 Image Size: 24,7 x 19,6 cm English: Gelatin silver print, printed in the 1960s on semi-matte paper 25,3 x 20,2 cm, in very good condition, flush-mounted on original cardboard. Photographer's copyright stamp, caption "Steigletz+O'Keefe, 1944" (sic!) by an unidentified hand in ink and numerical annotations in pencil on the reverse of the mount. LITERATURE One Mind's Eye. The Portraits and other photographs of Arnold Newman, Texts by B. Newhall and R. Sobieszek, Boston 1974, ill. 27; Arnold Newman's Americans, cat. National Portrait Gallery / Smithsonian Institute 1992, ill. 45. Alfred Stieglitz is undoubtedly one of the central protagonists in the history of photography, who, as an author of images and texts as well as an editor and gallery owner, shaped significant developments from Pictorialism to the modern visual language. Georgia O'Keeffe became known for her paintings of large-format flowers, which are among the most expensive works of art today. Stieglitz was the first to exhibit her work in 1916, the two became a couple and his photographs of her became legendary. As O'Keeffe's popularity grew in the 1930s and her relationship with Stieglitz became difficult, she retreated to New Mexico, where she painted animal skulls and desert landscapes. The portrait illustrates both the bond and the estrangement between the two famous artists. The Portraits and other photographs of Arnold Newman, Texte von B. Newhall und R. Sobieszek, Boston 1974, Abb. 27; Arnold Newman's Americans, cat. National Portrait Gallery / Smithsonian Institute 1992, Abb. 45.

ARNOLD NEWMAN (American, 1918-2006) Igor Stravinsky, New York City 1946 silver gelatin print signed lower right: Arnold Newman titled and dated lower left 24.5 x 47cm PROVENANCE: The Artist The Collection of Joyce Evans, Melbourne Private collection, Melbourne LITERATURE: Danziger, J., and Conrad, B., Interviews with Master Photographers, Paddington Press Ltd, New York, 1977, pp. 96-97 (another example) Newman, A., Arnold Newman: Five Decades, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, New York, 1986, pl. 61 (illus., another example) OTHER NOTES: Other examples of this print are held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Institute Chicago, Chicago; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis; and The Met, New York. American photographer Arnold Newman, often regarded as the creator of environmental portraiture, was best known for his photographic work of politicians and artists. As he explained, 'I didn't want to make a photograph with some things in the background. The surroundings had to add to the composition and the understanding of the person. No matter who the subject was, it had to be an interesting photograph. Just too simply do a portrait of a famous person doesn't mean a thing.'(1) The most well-known example of Newman's spectacular portraiture is his image of Russian composer and conductor, Igor Stravinsky, whose ballet and orchestral work, the Rite of Spring, premiered in Paris in 1913 and sparked one of the most intense riots in musical history due to the score's avant-garde nature and the unconventional choreography. The portrait is heightened by its nearly monochromatic tonality, accentuating the stark contrast between the white wall and the black piano. Newman purposefully integrated the open lid of the piano into the composition, likening it to the shape of a musical flat symbol - forceful, linear, and aesthetically resonant, mirroring Stravinsky's artistic essence. ARNOLD NEWMAN (1918-2006) Budd Hopkins. Silver print, the image measuring 9< 5/8x6 5/8 inches (24.4x16.8 cm.), the mount 17x14 inches (43.2x35.6 cm.), with Newman's signature, title, and date in pencil on mount recto and two of his address stamps on mount verso. 1964 Elliot Budd Hopkins was a well-known artist, author, and ufologist. He gained national acclaim for his collage techniques in the style of abstract expressionism, and won a Guggenheim Fellowship for painting. Today many major institutions include his work. He also gained considerable fame for his interest in UFOs, publishing books and conducting his own research, particularly in alien abduction phenomena. Hopkins' interest in UFOs and alien visitations was renewed the year this image was taken. He reported seeing a daytime UFO near Cape Cod, but was disappointed in the response, suspecting a government cover-up. Hopkins developed a particular interest in abductions or visitations, and is considered the "father" of that movement.
