New (b. 1986) Tuyum mixed media 60” x 41” x 42” (152 cm x 104 cm x 107 cm) One of the most exciting practitioners of “applied sculpture” in the Philippine art scene and creative industry, Jan Leeroy New does not subscribe to anything usual. Any untapped creative platforms and techniques also spark his artistic preoccupations. Always fascinated with monsters, aliens, and even undocumented animals, New creates works that have otherworldly, variant features. Everyday materials, also hardware-sourced materials, are brilliantly utilized; he bends and exhausts each medium’s qualities. As a sculptor, among other creative hats—street artist, fashion designer, production manager, and jewelry maker—he believes that mere creation is not enough. In an interview, he noted how sculptors have evolved into performance artists and social innovators; art must have a meaningful effect on the viewer. Tuyum, upon closer look, reveals the genius of New’s artistry that plays with concepts inspired by creatures with distinct exteriors. For this particular mixedmedia sculpture, New conceptualized on wordplay. In Hiligaynon, tuyum means strength. He then combined this meaning with the Cebuano word tuyom, which pertains to “sea urchin,” hence the long spines all over the sculpture. Costume-like in details and form, one sees his depiction of the sea urchin’s exterior that serves as a vital armor, encasing the body. New is the first recipient of the Sculpture Prize of the Metrobank Award for Design and Excellence. His work was also featured in the 2nd Singapore Biennale in 2008. A recipient of the CCP Thirteen Artists Awards in 2012, he was an Asian Cultural Council fellow in New York in 2016. Estimate: USD $800-$1040 Euros €666.66-€866.66

    Two hearts for the price of one, and not just any hearts! One seems to be a host of liquid faces, and the other seems like one whole alien body. Leeroy New is one of the Philippines’ most exciting young new multimedia, multidisciplinary, multiplatformed (Art, Design, Films, Fashion, Theatre) Artist, with a capital ‘A.’ For world acclaim, he, together with others like Kermit Tesoro, designed the muscle dress for singing-performing sensation Lady Gaga for her music video, Marry The Night, in 2011 (A mould of Lady Gaga’s body was made with silicon from a clay cast). His 2010 work, Balete, was inspired by Buddhist monks’ saffron robes and native balete strangler vines. In 2005, he won the Grand Prize for Sculptor in the Metrobank Art Awards. He was selected for the Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial in 2009 and his Terratoma II (War of the Worlds) was shown at the Singapore Biennale in 2008. He was one of three who won the Ateneo Art Award in 2009, together with Kiri Dalena and Patricia Eustaquio. He graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts.
