Jan Antoon Neuhuys, Dutch, 1832-1891, The Procession, (Edict of Nantes) oil on massive mahogany or walnut board, signed and dated lower right "J.A. Neuhuys 1870", verso graphite inscribed NOTE: The Edict of Nantes (French: Édit de Nantes), signed probably on 30 April 1598, (as noted in the flag carried by the courtiers) by King Henry IV of France, granted the Calvinist Protestants of France (also known as Huguenots) substantial rights in the nation, which was, at the time, still considered essentially Catholic.The painting expresses/focuses on the political struggles and conflict amongst the people caused by an essentially impersonal religious and political conflict. Onlookers are viewing the event in a celebratory event whilst two men to the left of the painting who are concealing weapons devising an assasination attempt. Neuhuys (lr) Oil on panel 24 1/2 x 18 3/4 inches Provenance: Florence Turnbull, New York An inscription from the artist, on an old label affixed to the back of the panel with the artist's seal, reads ...Marguerite devant le miroir chez Marthe-est peint par moi-meme. Anvers Janvier 1868 J.A. Neuhuys Dirty varnish. Frame rubbing. 5 inch split in panel, upper right corner - through to back. 6 inch scratch lower right area. Several small scratches throughout. Damage from nails in frame along the edges. Scattered craquelure. There does not appear to be an inpainting/restoration. Although some of the darker pigments fluoresce under UV light - this should not be mistaken for restoration.
