Moskau, Intourist, 1939. -- Seltenes, originales sowjetisches Werbeplakat, entworfen von der bekannten russischen Plakatgestalterin Maria Nesterova (Nesterova-Berzina; 1897-1965) für das staatliche Reiseunternehmen Intourist, das 1929 ins Leben gerufen worden war. Beworben wurde die blühende Hafenstadt Odessa, ein beliebtes Reiseziel am Schwarzen Meer in der südlichen Ukraine, die als "Perle des Schwarzen Meeres" galt. Atemberaubende Nachtansicht der Stadt mit bunten maritimen Flaggen vor einem Schiff mit roter Flagge, das an den Docks im Vordergrund vertäut ist, einem roten Licht auf einem Leuchtturm, das sich im ruhigen Wasser spiegelt, und der beleuchteten Stadt im Hintergrund, die die berühmte, 1841 entstandene Treppe, die durch Potemkins Film weltweite Berühmtheit erlangte. Sie führt von der Stadt zum Hafen, man sieht Bäume, Gebäude, Parks, Fabriken, Schiffe und Kräne. Unten links der Künstlername, oben der Titeltext oben und unten das Intourist-Logo. – Nur winzige, minimale Rollspuren, unwesentlich Knicke, kaum Randläsuren, von bemerkenswert gutem Zustand. Batumi is a Black Sea coastal town in Georgia. Renowned for a number of features, it most likely was advertised in a poster due to the fact that Joseph Stalin lived and worked in the city in the early years of the 20th century. Da Zdravstvuyet bratskiy soyuz i nerushimaya druzhba narodov [Long Live the Brotherly Union and the Unbreakable Friendship of the Peoples of the USSR], a poster by Maria Nesterova-Berzina (1897-1965). Published by Iskusstvo, Moscow, 1950. 76 x 50 cm.An “office wall” poster featuring the portraits of the Soviet “Great Leaders” and supplied with a long-shelf-life slogan. Treated more as proclamations of loyalty than propaganda pieces, such posters provided a handy interior decoration tool for offices of Soviet organizations and for cabinets of Soviet bureaucrats. In the early 1950s, posters of this genre were often executed in the pseudo-classicist manner to match the predominant style of late-Stalinist architecture Nesterova is better remembered as the artist of dynamic and cheery social and propaganda posters featuring Soviet children and women and for her travel posters produced for the Intourist competitions of 1930s.

MARIA NESTEROVA - BERZINA (1897–1965) SUMMER SPORTS IN USSR. Circa 1935. 40x24 3/4 inches, 102x62 cm. Condition B+: repaired tears and restoration at edges, some affecting image; repaired tear in central image; abrasions and restoration in margins and image. The use of constructivism and photomontage for propaganda had receded in the Soviet Union by the mid 1930s, in favor of Stalin's preferred 'smiling peasant' form of Socialist Realism. As an exception, travel posters that were targeted to a public outside the country were designed with more flair in a style comparable with other European travel posters of the era. This poster is an example of the "westernization" that the Soviet national travel agency, Intourist, was willing to undergo in the 1930s in order to attract foreign visitors. A crew is rowing up a scenic river toward a mighty metropolis in the distance. Presumably it is the Moskva River, which runs through Moscow (note the "M"s on the oarsmen's jerseys). Also noteworthy are the "wonderful" attractions along the river, such as the ferris wheel and the bathhouses. This is the English version.
