The publication of his visual diary became an international success and a multitude of journalistic commissions followed. Since 1997 he began to portrait remote cultures with his traditional plate camera, starting point for his hitherto most comprehensive project »Before They Pass Away«, on which he is working since 2010. Jimmy Nelson begann seine fotografische Karriere, als er Tibet ein Jahr lang zu Fuß durchquerte. Die Veröffentlichung seines visuellen Tagebuchs wurde ein internationaler Erfolg und eine Vielzahl von journalistischen Aufträgen folgte. Seit 1997 begann er, ferne Kulturen mit seiner traditionellen Plattenkamera zu porträtieren, Ausgangspunkt für sein bis dahin umfangreichstes Projekt »Before They Pass Away«, an dem er seit 2010 arbeitet.

From the series; Before They Pass Away The nomadic Mursi people live in the lower area of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. Extreme drought has made it difficult for them to feed themselves by means of traditional cultivation and herding. The establishment of national parks has restricted their access and threatened their natural resources. "It's better to die, than live without killing" The Mursi are famous for their stick-fighting ceremony and Mursi women are known all over the world for wearing clay plates in their lower lips. Their economy is concentrated on bartering and sharing possessions. As tourists are now often visiting Mursi villages, offering money in exchange for photographs, the communal economy is changing.
