  • John Preston Neale, British 1780-1847 Ramsgate from the Pier;
    Nov. 16, 2022

    John Preston Neale, British 1780-1847 Ramsgate from the Pier;

    Est: £250 - £350

    John Preston Neale, British 1780-1847 Ramsgate from the Pier; pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed and dated 'J P Neale 1935' (lower right), 12 x 19.5 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Phillips, London, 15 May 2001, lot 117. Note: Neale was primarily a draughtsman and watercolourist, best-known for his illustrations of stately homes, colleges, and churches, which formed the basis for a number of publications of prints produced throughout the artist's lifetime. Indeed, the present work hints at Neale's interest in architectural and ecclesiastical illustration, particularly in the impressive church tower in the background of the scene. However, the large number of figures depicted here marks a departure from the quieter nature which defines much of Neale's work, with the dense staffage in the foreground convincingly conveying the bustle and energy of the seaside scene.
