    Jean Claude Nattes (British, 1765 -1822) pen and ink wash on paper. Titled ‘Cottage and Mill at East Malling, Kent’ and dated ‘2nd August, 1816’ in lower left corner. Artwork depicts cottage in lush landscape. Artwork is double matted, with artist name typed along bottom. Artwork is set behind glass in gold beaded wood frame. Minor scuff on frame. Measures approx 15.75 inches in height by 18.75 inches in width with frame. Artwork has not been inspected outside of frame. Minor blemish in artwork. Antique pen and ink on paper, antique artwork, collectible fine art. ‘John Claude Nattes was a watercolourist and topographical draughtsman. In 1789 Sir Joseph Banks commissioned him to record the buildings of Lincolnshire and this resulted in more than 700 drawings and watercolours, made between 1789 and 1797, which are now preserved in Lincoln Central Library. This body of work provides researchers with a great deal of material with which to study pre-Victorian topography. Nattes produced some of the earliest examples of watercolour painting in Britain. The beautiful plates include iconic views of Bath from the Claverton Road, the Royal Crescent, the Pump Room, and Concert-Room dating from the time when Jane Austen was living there with her family (1802-1806). Jean-Claude Nattes was one of the most successful watercolour artists of his time. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1782 and 1814, and at the Old Watercolour Society, of which he was a founding member. However, in 1807, shortly after publication of this magnificent series of views of Bath, and at the height of his success, Nattes was excluded from the Society after accusations of exhibiting work of other artists under his own name.
