  • Stan Natchez (Born 1954) Native American, Oil on Canvas
    Mar. 29, 2025

Stan Natchez (Born 1954) Native American, Oil on Canvas

    Est: $400 - $800

Stan Natchez (Born 1954) Native American, Oil on Canvas. Realistically depicts a collection of different woven baskets grouped together. Thick impasto in the empty spaces. Signed bottom left. Inscribed in pen on the back with purchase information and dated 1987.  Overall Size: 49 x 55 in.  Sight Size: 47 x 53 in.  Stan Natchez was born in Los Angeles, California in 1954, the child of Shoshoni/Paiute parents. Despite being raised in a modern city his grandmother made sure to expose him to his Native American heritage, instructing him in traditional beadwork. His father, who authored a book on the connections between Jungian and Native American symbolism, encouraged him to become a teacher, and he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Colorado and his MFA from Arizona State University. He taught Humanities for ten years at Ormes Prep School in Arizona, eventually hired to become the editor of Native Peoples Magazine. He began participating in traditional Native American dances, inspired by the lessons of his grandmother to craft his own outfits, and eventually was touring throughout Europe performing before heads of state. Through dancing he became immersed in the world of Native Art, and became particularly influenced by the connections he saw between their traditional beliefs and the fragmented, dream-like self-awareness of Pop Art. Gravitating towards artists like Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns, he began painting in oils and watercolors, eventually developing his signature look after coming across reams of uncut misprint dollar bills and using them as the base layer for his canvas. Considering them “the new buffalo hide,” he soon began to incorporate other elements like pages from bibles, telephone books, and stock certificates, overlaying them with a variety of mixed media in a dizzying array of themes that has made him one of the definitive Neo-Pop artists amongst Native Americans. Although much of his work is imbued with symbolism of the centuries-old conflict between European invaders and indigenous peoples, it is also always brightly colored and rife with humorous elements, an attempt to express a contemporary native philosophy purged of romantic, stereotypical idealism which he instilled in his teaching as well. Natchez has exhibited nationally at The Southwest Museum, The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, and The National Museum of the American Indian, as well as around the globe in institutions in Denmark, England, and Germany, with his pieces in many private and public collections including The Museum of the American Indian and the Smithsonian. #6126 .

  • STAN NATCHEZ "BASKETS STILL LIFE" OIL ON CANVAS
    Dec. 03, 2022

STAN NATCHEZ "BASKETS STILL LIFE" OIL ON CANVAS

    Est: -

Stan Natchez (1954-) "Baskets Still Life" Oil on Canvas. A Shoshoni/Paiute, Stan Natchez was born in Los Angeles, California. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Colorado and his MFA at Arizona State University. In addition to being a nationally known artist, Natchez has distinguished himself as a graduate student, teacher, dancer, editorial advisor and legal advocate for the native American community. As a traditional dancer who performed in European capitals as well as throughout the United States, Natchez developed a fine eye for both color and composition from the beadwork he created for his regalia. He also credits dance as a medium for building a stronger sense of cultural self-esteem. Stan Natchez is known for his innovative and creative paintings. Inspired by Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, T.C. Cannon and other pop artists, his paintings exude the power of color and familiar objects. His canvases often begin with artifacts of American culture that either directly or indirectly reflect Indians. He then includes figures such as Native Americans, mission priests or cowboys. Intricate "stars and stripes" beadwork add texture to bold works that emanate beauty and joy. Dollar bills are layered on the canvas as a modern day buffalo hide. "I feel fortunate for having been raised in the city because of the perspective it gave me on modern life. However, without an awareness of our traditional heritage, we as Native Americans have no identity. By taking the best of both worlds, the modern and the traditional, we are better able to find balance in our lives," says Natchez. Natchez feels equally strongly about communicating contemporary Native American philosophy that has been purged of any romantic or stereotypical idealism. Instead, the viewer is exposed to traditional teaching and contemporary cultural doctrines. As Natchez says, "I paint the life I live and so every painting I do is, in some way, a self-portrait. My art is about you and the way I respond. That is my experience...my experience is my art...and art is my life." Artist: Stan Natchez Title: "Baskets Still Life" Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature Type: Hand Signed Signature Location: Lower Left Site Measurement: 47.25 x 53.5in Keywords: Native American, Indian Artwork, Art; Ref: BD1203
