Natali III (Giovanni Battista, 1698-1765), Attr. - Three stage designs: Arched entrance to a courtyard, and palace interiors

    Est: £2,000 - £3,000

pen and brown ink, grey wash, touches of graphite, on laid paper, the monumental arch numbered ' lower right, 210 x 155 mm., the two interiors 130 x 100 mm. and 115 x 90 mm. each, the three presented in one mount, light browning, one or two small nicks to sheet edges, occasional surface dirt, (3) Provenance: Edmond Fatio (Geneva, c.1871-1959) [Lugt 3472]; Unknown sale; Sale. Christie's, London, Old Master Drawings , 6th July 1993, lot 116 (as 'Member of the Bibiena Family') William H. Schab, Inc., New York (according to inscription on reverse of frame) Literature: cf. Myers, Mary L., Architectural and Ornament Drawings: Juvarra, Vanvitelli, The Bibiena Family & Other Italian Draughtsmen . Exh. cat. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1975, cat. no. 52a. The present three drawings have previously been idenitifed by Peter Fuhring as having come from an album of stage designs, the main body originally in the Fatio Collection. Other examples by the same hand are in the Metropolitan Museum (see acc. no. 1974.606.6, 1974.606.4, and 80.3.627), where an attribution to Giovanni Battista Natali III (1698-1765) has found favour. Other examples can be found in the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, and with another example illustrated in Fuhring's Design into Art, London, 1989, no.888. Attributions that have been suggested include Mauro Antonio Tesi (1730-1766) and Giuseppe Valeriano (1542-1596), as well as the current suggestion of Natali III. The influence of Ferdinando and Giuseppe Bibiena is nevertheless clearly apparent.
