  • 17th Century Dutch School by Peter Nason - Lady with Cupid
    Mar. 20, 2025

17th Century Dutch School by Peter Nason - Lady with Cupid

    Est: €9,000 - €9,500

Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 76 x 63 cm. With frame: 86 cm x 73 cm. Good condition. Pieter Nason (baptised 16 February 1612 in Amsterdam – 1688/90 in The Hague) was a Dutch painter. In 1639 he became a member of the Painters' Guild in The Hague and in 1656 he was one of the forty-seven members who founded the Pictura Society. According to a manuscript by Pieter Terwesten, it does not seem unlikely that Nason was a pupil of Jan van Ravensteyn; and his name is believed to have been erased from paintings since attributed to Mierevelt, Moreelse and, above all, Ravensteyn. It is certain that he painted the portrait of Prince Mauritz, governor of the Brazils, engraved by Houbraken, and those of Charles II of England, engraved by C. Van Dalen and Sandrart, and of the Great Elector.

Nason, Pieter Den Haag 1612 - um 1689 87 x 68 cm Portrait of gentleman in a dark dress with a white collar and cuffs as half-length figure. Oil/canvas, relined, signed and dated 1663 lower right. Pieter Nason is thought to have been a pupil of Nicolas Eliasz. Pickenoy and Jan van Ravensteyn an became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1639. The subjects of his paintings were invariably aristocratic patrons in elaborate dress; in this portrait, the sitter's status is evidenced by his embroidered white collar and cuffs.

Pieter Nason, Portrait of Pieter Pauw

    Est: €12,000 - €16,000

Pieter Pauw was born in 1611 into an important patrician family in Amsterdam. He became captain of a regiment in the service of the state and was later made a Knight of the Order of St Michael. He was also a nobleman of the King of France. He died after a short but successful life in 1637. There is also a very similar portrait of his brother, Michiel Pauw, Lord of Hoogersmildel. This portrait is signed Pieter Nason and dated 1647. It is now in the collection of the Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota (see RKD image archive. no. 130459). Both portraits are single portraits in oval format, each showing a different city in the background and with slight differences in the sitter's posture and clothing.

Pieter Nason, Portrait of a Lady

    Est: €6,000 - €8,000

The elegant clothing and the sumptuous pearl jewellery reveal the high social status of the lady depicted, whose identity has unfortunately not yet been established. She is shown half-length against a landscape background and holds a small bouquet of flowers gracefully in her hand. Pieter Nason, the painter of our portrait, was born in Amsterdam, but from 1638/39 he lived in The Hague, the seat of the Dutch government and governor. Here he painted numerous portraits of noblemen, citizens of The Hague and foreign diplomats. In addition, he worked for the governor of Friesland, Wilhelm Friedrich von Nassau-Dietz, and the Brandenburg elector Friedrich Wilhelm. We would like to thank Prof. Dr. Rudi Ekkart and Claire van den Donk, Blaricum, for confirming the authorship of Pieter Nason on the basis of high-resolution photographs. They date the portrait to the second half of the 1660s.

Rahmen. • Pieter Nason, Portrait of Adriaen van Slijp(e) Portrait of Elisabeth van Slijp(e)
    Nov. 14, 2020

Pieter Nason, Portrait of Adriaen van Slijp(e) Portrait of Elisabeth van Slijp(e)

    Est: €15,000 - €18,000

His portrait signed upper right: P Nason (P and N conjoined), hers signed and dated lower right: P Nason (P and N conjoined) 16 [the two last digits illegible] With old labels on the backs of the stretchers inscribed “Leut Colonel Adriaen van Slijpe / Kinderloos overladen” and “Elisabeth van Slijpe / getr. met Johan van Roer“. According to these hand-written inscriptions, the sitters depicted in these works are half siblings of the Slijp(e) family from Friesland who later settled in Maastricht. Adriaen was the son of Rogier Adriaensz. Slijp (died 1634) and his first wife Trijntie Stephensdr., whereas Elisabeth was born to his second wife Beatrix van Lennep. She later married Jan (Johan) van de Roer (died 1673). Adriaen van Slijp became captain of a Friesian company in 1624 before being appointed major in 1639, and lieutenant colonel of the 2nd infantry regiment of the army of Friesland-Nassau in 1646. Members of the family, which died out in 1879, also held the office of mayor of Maastricht several times throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The magnificent breastplate and baton in his portrait testify to Adriaen van Slijp's rank as a military commander. The portrait of his sister in turn reflects her high social standing, depicting her in an elegant yellow silk gown and sumptuous pearl jewellery. Both portraits follow a popular compositional scheme for portraits in which the sitters are shown in three-quarter view against a landscape backdrop with a column as an additional symbol of sovereignty. Pieter Nason, the author of both these works, was born in Amsterdam but moved to The Hague, seat of the Dutch parliament and the Stadtholder, in circa 1638/39. He created numerous portraits of the city's finest citizens, foreign diplomats and high-ranking officers from aristocratic families.

Frederik Muller, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, sale of November 8-15, 1955, Lot 313. D. Katz, Dieren, The Netherlands. Acquired directly from the above on August 14, 1940. Alois Miedl, caretaker of Jacques Goudstikker, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Gifted from the above on August 19, 1944. Collection of Dr. E. Plietzsch. Private Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. note: Dutch painter Pieter Nason was born in Amsterdam in 1612. Much of his career as a portraitist was spent in the nearby city of The Hague, where, in 1639, he was accepted as a member by the St. Luke's Guild of Painters. In 1656, Nason helped establish the Confrerie Pictura along with nearly fifty other artists, including Jacob van der Does and Willem Doudyns. While little is known about Nason's life, it is believed he was a pupil of Jan van Ravesteyn, another founding member of the Confrerie Pictura and a portraitist for the Royal Court. The present piece, executed in 1667, is indicative of Nason's style of portraiture, with firm roots in the Dutch Golden Age of painting. We wish to thank the Netherlands Institute for Art History, also known as the R.K.D., for confirming the authenticity of the present lot, and for their assistance in cataloguing the present lot.

Attributed to Pieter Nason (Dutch, 1612-1688) Portrait of a gentleman, aged 23, standing half length, in cuirassier's armour, his right hand upon his feathered helmet before a gold and red curtain, a battle in the far right distance inscribed lower right "AE 23" oil on canvas h:108 w:94 cm Provenance: Sold at auction by Bukowski, Stockholm in 1950 as by John Riley with the sitter unidentified; sale 13 September 1950 by a Mrs. G. Frisk on behalf of the deceased estate of Mr. Carl Frisk. Acquired by the vendor's late husband from the Woodbridge Gallery in Suffolk some thirty years ago The sitter, although as yet unidentified, is clearly, from the quality of his armour and the plumed helmet, of high birth and almost certainly continental, although Pieter Nason was known to have painted Englishmen when in the Hague. Although this is clearly a late 17th century portrait, in the opinion of one specialist the armour may well be in fact circa 1580, although another armour expert has described it as '17th Century cuirassier's armour of very fine quality'.
